I am researching the Silhouette SD and am almost positive I'm going to buy one, but was wondering about the add-on software. I've heard of SCAL and Make the Cut, but do they do the same thing and which do you like better?
TIA!

Re: Silhouette SD Question
The software I'm inquiring about is Sure Cuts a Lot and Make the Cut. They allow you to hook up the silhouette to your computer and use any font or graphic to cut on your silhouette.

I have never used SCAL. I use MTC. I've used it with the Cricut and now with my Sil. Both have large followings and they pretty much do the same thing. MTC just released version 3.3.2 (?) that is compatible with the Sil and has a virtual Sil mat. It has a lot of great new features and they paired up with Lettering Delights (a huge plus for many SVG users). Best bet is to download the trial versions of both and see which you like better.
Sil also comes with their own software that is pretty cool. I have used it a few times. They will be releasing a new software that you can use SVGs with as well. The current software, SIlhouette Studio, doesn't allow you to manipulate SVGs without having to convert the files first.
What is it you make with your Sil? Do you use SVGs at all? If so, I know a few cool sites.
BTW, SIlhouette will be releasing the Silhouette Cameo in October. It's a 12"x12" cutter. The SD is a 8" width (or a bit less) I believe. It will be priced at $299 so if you need a bigger cutter I would hold out.

Thanks so much! I plan on using it to make vinyl decals, stencils and cards, but I'm sure I'll come up with many more once I start using it. I almost bought a Cricut Personal Cutter a few months ago but decided against it due to all the extra cost associated with the carts.
Please send me the links to the SVG sites, I would really appreciate it, and I'll make sure to download the trials to SCAL and MTC to see which I like better.

No problem! Oh side note, I am not sure the Cameo will support MTC so that's a little up in the air.
Here are the sites I frequent for SVG and graphic files (graphics are great with the print and cut feature on the SIlhouette):
Lettering Delights - graphics and SVGs
SVG Attic - SVGs
SVG Cuts - SVGs
Free SVG Files - SVGs
My Graphico - graphics and SVGs
There are a ton more. The Free SVG Files site will link you to other sites. Also, you can just do a search for SVGs and you will come up with a lot of sites. I follow a few blogs and find out a lot about the different sites to buy Graphics, SVGs, and other crafting items such as twine and stamps.
