Interesting Article about Pregnancy

So I just read this article about how there is a different test that you can take to find our the sex of your baby sooner. I thought it was pretty cool.

But then, as I kept reading, the article then starts talking about how some people are against it because they think it will lead to more abortions if the sex of the baby isn't the one the parents want.

....um, WHAT?!?! (phrase of the day). Do people REALLY have abortions if the sex of the baby isn't the one they want? The article briefly points out that "While some American couples use ultrasound results as a reason to terminate a healthy pregnancy..."

I don't understand how there are actual people in the world that would do such a thing?!? I think it's great that there is a test that can be done sooner to find out the sex of your baby, but the thought of aborting him or her because it's a girl when i want a boy first is ridiculous!! I am pro-choice, but this is ridiculous.

What are your thoughts on this, especially our nesties that are expecting? Are you just as shocked by this as I am?!?!

Re: Interesting Article about Pregnancy

  • Maybe this kind of thing would happen in China where having a boy as your first born in all they care about, but I too can't imagine that this kind of thing happens here in America...maybe I'm naive. The whole idea just sounds crazy to me!!

I agree that this kind of technology seems really cool to me too, but I'm not sure I would be 100% comfortable trusting the results....

  • I'm completely pro-choice, but terminating a pregnancy because of gender does not bode well with me either.  I get that it's done in some countries such as China and India because of population constrictions but it's sad.  I hope if this test does move to the States that it's not "misused" like in other countries.

  • I think in countries like China where you are allowed to only have one child this is very prevalent. I also read an article about how this is causing major problems in China (I will look for it). I think that is so sad that people in the US do that but I didn't realize it was something that happened so often.

Ditto!  It is really awesome technology, but also potentially dangerous.
