Transplant Trees?

We are in the process of preparing to build a home and there are a few young trees that were planted on the lot that will be in awkward places once the house is built. 

I HATE the idea of killing them - they are probably 8-10 ft tall (but thin - not sure exactly what type of tree - maybe Elm).

Any recommendations on trying to dig them up and transplant - what time of year would give them the best chance?

Species makes a difference. Some are more tolerant of moving and associated root loss, others are not.

It's important to have the new planting site ready to accept the tree before you dig and lift it. You need to minimize the time the roots are above ground, and keep them moist. HydroGel may be helpful.

I do recommend you consult with an Arborist in your area who is experienced in this type of procedure.

we're transplanting our tree too - the previous owner planted a tree right near the water line/front of home and we're afraid it'll grow too big, and the roots will tear up the water line.  good luck! i'll let ya know if i find anything out.
