Graphic designers what's your choice...
I am getting ready to start a class to gain more experience and knowledge in photoshop. This is post degree and the little bit of design I did in college kept me in the media lab for hours. As a newlywed and full time employee, I want to be able to work from home when it is convenient for me. We had Macs and I really enjoyed it but they are pricey so I want to be sure the investment is worth it. Also, the iMac is considerably less expensive but if a Mac is absolutely the way to go, will I sell myself short on mobility? The computer sites just don't answer these questions!
Re: Graphic designers what's your choice...
Honestly I bought my mac book pro back in 2008 and it's still going strong. And I never have regretted it. I use an imac at work, and it's pretty good too. I have noticed burn-in on the screen, which seemed to be an issue, and hopefully they've fixed that but I'm not sure.
The plus is apple and adobe do offer student discounts, so if you're taking classes make sure you get the discount!
I use a PC, because A) some of the programs I need for my profession are not available on Mac, and
I can't afford a Mac. That being said, I use Photoshop and Illustrator on my PC laptop on a regular basis and have never had any problems.
I suppose the main benefit to using a PC is that I can afford a much larger screen laptop (or desktop if I were to get one) than I can with Mac, and designing things on a tiny screen is a big PITA. In college many of my friends would take out extra loan money and get a tiny 13" Macbook, and by the time you put all your toolbars up you can barely see anything lol!
You really can't go wrong either way to be honest. It's really about what you want to spend right now. Of course if you are concerned about your image as a designer, you definitely want a Mac because using a PC makes you look like some sort of freak of nature...lol
I converted in 2004 when I started attending a school where the graphic department that had a Mac lab. That original Macbook lasted me for about 3 years when I decided I wanted a new one. I went through 2 in about 2 years, but they died due to my negligence (soda and water, terrible!). I now have a iMac (my H won't let me have any more laptops lol) and while I miss having a laptop, making myself have a desktop makes it much easier to actually use graphic programs since I have an actual desk (not my lap) and a place for my mouse.
When we got me the iMac, my H picked out a refurbished one (he is a computer dork so I let him make the official decisions) and it's still working great. We upgraded the RAM on it and I'm finally running Leopard (is that the last OS they came out with? Either way, I'm not 100% up to date as far as the OS goes, but I'm only one behind) and it's definitely a workhorse.
