unsuccessful at veggies...help!
Hi all,
I am really bummed lately about my inability to grow some veggies. I am a successful gardener, I would say, except for edibles?...I can grow herbs and tomatoes, as far as edibles go.
Last summer, I tried squash, which we love to eat. Those cutworms destroyed them.
Now, I have vining beans going and something is eating them. Eating the blooms right off the stem, so I have gotten ZERO beans so far from them.
I am so frustrated, I feel like giving up on trying any new veggies!!! And I would love to EAT those veggies that I've grown.
Thanks for listening...so frustrating!
Re: unsuccessful at veggies...help!
I have no beans either, but for an entirely different reason--no pollination. My bean plants are 10 feet tall, there are HUNDREDS of blooms on them, and we have not had a single bean develop in over 3 weeks.
I guess I should be thankful for the three little bean harvests early in the season.
Sorry you're having a rough veggie garden year. But that's just it, everyone has bad years. I always plan for at least 1 or 2 complete crop failures. Last year it was the carrots and the winter squash. This year my beans & beets aren't doing so well.
Expecting something to die makes it that much sweeter when something actually lives long enough for a harvest :-)
You never know what year is going to be a good year for any particular veggie, so don't stop trying new things!
Whatever is not working in your yard right now I'd rip it out and start prepping for fall! I'm about to tear out our two eggplant. I want to plant carrots, turnips, brussel sprouts, etc for fall plants.
Thanks for the encouragement! So many other plants are thriving, but I'm just irrtated at these darn veggies.
I did just plant some lettuce seeds yesterday.....I really think it's deer eating the bean blossoms/sprouts. There is no other animal who could reach up that high!
I will keep at it! : )
