Has anyone ever cut into a watermelon and seen a big gaping hole in the middle of it?
I've never seen anything like it. We tossed it.
Re: Watermelon experts
not a big gaping hole, but a big cracked crater like a geode or something.
I am guessing a bug gets into it early, bores out a home - then escapes/dies/whatever and the watermelon keeps growing and the hole gets bigger?
Mine I think was too old - we tossed it too.
Also - a good tip on picking a watermelol - nevermind thumping or knocking it - pick the watermelon that has the yellowest belly on it. It has never failed me - I read it in a cooking magazine, thought it was total bullshitt, but its not. I always pick one that is the greenest, with the yellowest belly.
Winner winner, everytime.
Yup! And make sure there's a flat spot on the bottom. Melons flatten a bit when fully ripe.
