I think I might want to try not shampooing my hair

(enough qualifiers for ya?)

Any advice?

I anticipate a period of really bad hair days.  True?

Do you use *anything* on your hair ever?

I had friends years ago who didn't shampoo their hair but once every month or so.  They told me they had bad hair days and on those days they covered their hair with a scarf (do rag).  I don't know what that a bad hair day actually meant though.

I got this great haircut in June and for the past six weeks or so I've been shampooing every other day and my hair always looks amazing on the second day but crap the first.  This is why I want to try.

Re: I think I might want to try not shampooing my hair

  • I have naturally curly dry hair, and I use a sulfate free shampoo about once a week.  I conditioner "wash" daily though.  I also use non silicone styling products as well.

I had a bit of trial and error fiding the right combination or products, but I love it.

    nothing
  • I asked my stylist last week about washing my hair and how often. She said to brush the oils through. She said to avoid dry shampoo. She recommended for oily days to use baby powder to help. I found that interesting. This is my first week. I am on day three. I am getting over the "yucky" feeling. Let me know what you feel and what works best for you.
  • I have very fine curly hair and reduced to 2-3 washings per week (not cuz I wanted....just because with the kiddos, that's all I found time for) but then my curls looked so much better, so i stuck with that.  Now I am starting the switch to 'condition' washing only.  And I think I am going to try the baking soda thing too....I am curious how it will work.

  • Do you have curly hair?  This is a great site (I love the book) . . .http://www.naturallycurly.com/CurlyGirlChallenge

I haven't shampooed in almost a year, I use a little lavender castile soap once a week and lots of conditioner.  Be prepared for your scalp to rebel for a little while, and ween yourself off it gradually, but it's totally worth it once your hair and scalp adjust to no shampoo.  On bad hair days I spritz with a lavender water/vegetable glycerin spray and then let it air dry.
  • If you don't wash it and your hair gets greasy try putting baby powder in your hair to take out the oily look. all my friends do it and seems to work really well for them.

thankfully I only wash my hair once a week and it looks fine til the next washing. My husband gets so jealous. :)

  • I wash with a little baking soda and water, then rinse with apple cider vinegar and water.  But I only use them once or twice per week (as needed).  My hair looked like crap for a few months at the beginning, but that was 4 years ago now.
  • I'm late and don't usually post over here, but I was lurking today and thought I'd put in my two cents.

Like the PP, I wash my roots with baking soda and water.  Then I condition with apple cider vinegar and water.  I originally started doing this after I couldn't find an affordable sulfate-free shampoo and came across an article online.  I never thought it would work for me but I gave it a try, was pleasantly surprised, and now I've been doing this for a few months!  I had to tweak it some in the beginning and still occasionally feel like I need to wash with a low sulfate shampoo, but once in awhile is better than every day I suppose.  I love knowing that it's cheaper and healthier.  Plus, my hair is softer and more manageable now.
