I have a picture that was taken in close up mode/(macro?) on my point and shoot, so the photo is grainy looking and a little dark. The only thing I have used photoshop for is to smooth face areas and remove a water mark. I played with the photo a little bit yesterday, but didn't have too much luck. Experts out there, is it even worth my time. Can I lighten the face areas and smooth the texture out? If not, its not a big deal... just figured I use this to get a little more experience with ps.
Heres the picture:

Re: Photoshop?
Yes you can
It is underexposed (looks like the picture may have been metered using the landscape beyond the window, which can easily happen with the strong contrast of lighting) so it won't be perfect; however, you can certainly play with it to make it more the way you want.
What I would do: I would make a new adjustment layer for the "lighting" and I would add a bit of fill light.
Then I would use the quick selection tool on the faces and run the adjustment layer again to lighten the faces a bit more.
(The reason I would do it twice is because if you just do the faces, the lighting won't blend right and even then you may still need to play with the opacity of the layers.)
Then, under "filters" you can run the noise reduction filter. - Do this part last because brightening the photo will add more grain to it.
