Help with weaning

I had both down to 2 bottles a day one with breakfast and one before bed.  They've been getting milk in their sippy cups during lunch and water the rest of the day.

This morning I took away the one at breakfast and gave them milk in their sippy cups.  DD actually threw the sippy at me a few times while continually crying, DS just cried.  I gave them some cheerios and that seemed to distract them.  DS drank some milk out of it, DD drank very little.  They are playing now so I think we made it through ok.

My dilemna is do I still give them their bedtime bottle to make sure they are getting enough milk or do I go cold turkey and give them milk in their sippy before bedtime.  Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Help with weaning

  • This is where I am with DD right now :-( She threw a full body tantrum when I tried to give her milk in a sippy for her morning drink yesterday. Like screaming, arching her back, flailing around. So I caved and gave her back a bottle. We are just working on day time bottles to sippies - hoping daycare will help us with that in the next few weeks. then I think i'm going cold turkey with daytime bottles. Once she's off them and drinking during the day I will work on the bedtime one.

Not easy - my son was SO simple, I'm not used to this kind of a challenge!

  • How old are they?

  • They are just over 1.
  • They are just over 1.  They've been drinking from a sippy for a couple of months.  Just gave them milk in their sippy with dinner and they drank a good amount of it.  We'll see how bedtime goes.  Not sure if I'm going to offer it to them or not.  I'm going to play it by ear.
  • DD had a really difficult time with the transition.  I can't remember exactly how I weaned her but I do remember that there were Nuby sippies that had a soft spout that worked much better than the hard spout that she loved.  She also really like the take n toss ones.   Again a little softer than the playtex type.

    Good luck.
