Contacting current employer?

Another question, on an app when it says can we contact your current employer....can I put No if my current employer doesn't know I'm looking? I've never had a job contact an old one but this would be the one time they would when I don't want them to.

Re: Contacting current employer?

  • It's ok to say no to that inquiry. Many employers will ask you about your current job and why you might be leaving, just don't badmouth your boss. :)

  • This was asked this week, and is a common topic.

You can always call and ask what their policy is. If they say they'll only contact your current employer when they have an offer ready, you can say Yes. Or you can say Not At This Time, if that's an option

  • I always say no and it's never been a problem.  I just do not want to risk my current employer getting a phone call.

For my current job, when I checked "no" to contacting current employer (well it is previous employer at this point), they asked me to fax a copy of my most recent paycheck stub, so they could verify I did work there.  I blacked out all the financial info.  Not so much that I didn't want them to see salary, but more so because I did not think it was new company's business how much my health insurance cost at old company or how much they matched my 401K, etc.  I was still in the process of negotiating salary and new company offered much cheaper, better benefits so I didn't want new company to not agree to anything on salary knowing I was getting cheaper health and dental, a better 401K match, etc.
