<angry face>

Someone i went to high school with invited me to be a FB friend a yearish ago.  I knew of him him HS, but he was a year below and i don't think we ever had a class together.  I accepted it and all has been well.  He's in grad school, too, so we had a little to talk about in that department.
Today, he posted an article about a fatal pitbull attack in CA and said it was b/c pit bulls are bad, and that they should be illegal.  I explained several reasons why the problem isn't pit bulls existing, but how they tend to be kept by people who choose to have them.  Specifically, i cited a 2003 CDC study which found that 86.4% of fatal dog attacks (in the US) are by intact male dogs.  The dog in this attack was a 2-year-old un-neutered male dog.
So this guy deleted my response, then un-friended me.  Obviously no loss to me, but it does upset me that people aren't willing to consider the information available to them (facts, context, etc.).

    what a lame-wad.

    it's funny because i was having this conversation with a friend yesterday. my dog is a mixed breed....he looks pretty german shepard i think, to most people (but obv mixed). the friend asked me "what is he mixed with to make him so calm and un-aggressive?" i responded "um....good parenting?" my dog is german shepard, rottweiler, malamute, and lab. all (except lab) are aggressive, and on lots of "banned" lists. i also used to mother a sweet, loving pitbull..

    it's unfortunate that people think the dog breed has such a strong correlation with aggression.

    What she said.

    But I guess I can't really talk bc I unfriended (prior to me leaving FB) that one dude that said super anti-gay remarks on his FB page.

  • huh, lame on his part.  I hope he isn't going to grad school for anything that relates to animals' general welfare or research involving animals.  Those kind of opinions make me sad.

    He's not.  And in generally, he's a really great guy (volunteers with humanitarian efforts, etc.).

    UW -- that's the opposite, i think... you un-friending him for his bigotry would be like me un-friending him for his canine prejudices

    Yeah, i keep thinking of ditching facebook... but i never do it.  And while i'm on (is that the right term?) google+, i haven't really gotten the hang of it yet.

  • My brother and SIL own a pitbull mix (they think with greyhound), and she's spayed, and SUPER laid-back. My bro and SIL have trained her very well, and she is great around kids (they have a 2 year-old with neighbors the share a back yard with who have another 2-year-old and a 5 year-old). I totally agree it's nature vs. nurture and how the dog is treated.

  • I agree....it's super annoying when people are very close-minded and won't pay attention to actual statistics.

    We're pretty sure Satchel is part pit bull (that was my guess, and our vet agrees it's a strong possibility).  We made every effort to socialize him from the very beginning, and he's not aggressive at all.  Pit Bulls aggressive tendencies are actually usually shown towards other dogs, not people.  We've always watched Satchel closely at dog parks and with other dogs, and he's never once shown aggression towards another dog (or a person, for that matter).  He's super gentle towards little dogs and towards kids, and towards adults...well, we're working on breaking him of his habit of jumping on people (because he's so excited to play with them).
