I have a crappy Android phone on Verizon, and I'm eligible for an upgrade. I was prepared to wait for the rumored iPhone 5, but now my phone is starting to make it difficult to text and is generally being annoying. I'm debating going ahead and just getting the iPhone 4. Do you guys think this is a terrible idea, and that I should just suck it up and wait; or is the iPhone 4 a good enough phone that it won't matter that it's being upstaged soon?
Re: New iPhone
It doesn't matter when you get an iphone, 6-12 months later, a new one comes out - guaranteed.
One thing to note with the current Verizon iphone, you cannot talk and surf on the web at the same time - I use that feature a lot on my AT&T iPhone 3GS
"They say with time it gets better. Not true. With time you only get used to it."
I believe that it's going to be within the next 2-4 weeks that the new iPhone will be announced. I personally look forward to a new (hopefully new, at least) physical design of the phone. It's rumored that the 5 will be more ergonomic. While the 4 isn't, it's like holding a brick to your ear.
I love my 4 and I think it's awesome. I think you will save some money because likely the 4's will be on a "sale" when the 5's come. But, for myself, I'd definitely wait for the 5 if I was going to be getting an iPhone right now.
FWIW, I upgraded from Android to an iPhone because I shattered my Incredible. Android has some advantages but overall, I'm thrilled with the iPhone and will never go back to an Android OS.
Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely switching to an iPhone because of my experiences with Android. I agree with you, Blueshirt, about the apps from the App Store vs. Android Market. H has had an app mess up his phone, and that made me worry about the quality of those apps. I also think the interface on android is a little cluttered, and it drives me crazy that there always seem to be apps running in the background and slowing my phone down no matter how many times I run a task killer.
I think I'll stick it out another couple weeks, because my birthday is coming up and, for all I know, H might get me one. He's mentioned it before. If he doesn't get me one by then, I'll see if there are any clues about the 5. If not, I'll probably just get the 4.
I had this same problem, obviously, and I think it's an absurd feature of the Android OS. It really shouldn't be that difficult to control what is running on my phone, and the fact that I had to download a special app to stop apps from running - and then check it regularly because the apps would magically start up again - drove me insane. FroYo was a particular disappointment. It was supposed to be a fantastic upgrade and instead it just seemed to have a variety of bugs.
I also found Android to be less than intuitive overall. I didn't think it was organized well in many instances and I often felt as though I had to jump through multiple hoops to find things that should have been more obviously located.
For app security, I used Lookout, which actually ran quite well and let me save all of my apps, as well as contact and calendar information, online. For anyone reading this thread who uses an Android-based phone, I strongly recommend that you get Lookout.
Jess, regardless of what you decide to do in terms of timing, have fun! You will love your new iPhone.
