Is my one eggplant plant screwed?

Can they self-pollinate or do you need atleast two to get fruit? I've had this one plant (dunno why I got just one!) and its done great with lots of flowers but no fruits.

Re: Is my one eggplant plant screwed?

  • We have two eggplant and the one traditional plant only produced one large eggplant.  The other plant is a Japanese eggplant and it produced three.  It has flowered and dropped flowers since but hasnt made anymore fruit.  I'm confused by the plant.  My mother said she usually got just 1 fruit per plant.  When did you plant yours?  We planted around Mothers Day
  • I was having issues with blossoms dropping and no eggplants.  I read that you can take the male flower and rub the pollen on the female flower to pollinate or take a q-tip or paint brush and rub it on the inside of the male flower and then the female flower.  I did the first option and now I have 5 eggplants growing on 3 plants!

I've also noticed more bees in my garden lately, so that could also be helping.  I also read that sometimes shaking the plant lightly when the flowers are open will help pollinate since male and female blossoms are on the same plant.

  • well shoot ok! Maybe I'll go get to some pollinatin' if it still has any flowers.

one thing I'm doing next year more is planting some bee attracting flowers!

  • Be patient with eggplant. It's usually at least 75 days from transplant to seeing fruit. Especially if they're the larger fruits. Are you watering enough? I've seen blossoms drop when we hit a dry spell and I got lazy with the hose.

Last year wasn't a good year for Solanaceae here. I got three eggplants from the traditional plant and 6-8 each from the asian varieties. If you live in a short-summer climate, you might try the asian varieties next year. They're smaller, but sweeter and more tender.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
