How much do you pay for car insurance?

DH and I are paying 2500 a year for an 08 small Acura suv.  We have clean driving records and are over 30. We live in the city of Boston.  Just trying to see if its worth it to shop around or keep it bundled with our home owners insurance....

Re: How much do you pay for car insurance?

  • Ours just went up because DH has 3 claims.  So we pay $1500 a year out in the suburbs for an 2008 SUV and a 2010 pick up truck.
  • Wow, that seems like a lot!  You will pay a premium living in the city....the farther away you live, the cheaper it is (same with homeowners).  What insurance company are you with?  We are with Commerce and get a discount with our AAA membership, and by bundling with our homeowners.
  • We just moved from PA to MA and our car insurance doubled.

  • We have Geico because its the company our home owners insurance uses when they bundle policies.  It seems high to me even with being in the city.  I guess we will add looking into insurance to our to do list.
  • We pay a little under $1400 a year for an '06 Mazda 3 hatch and an '07 Honda Civic in the suburbs (495) with Amica. $2500 seems quite high.

  • I agree with everyone else that that's really high.  Do you have a super low deductible or something?

  • there really isn't much shopping around you can do in MA - there's like this no-monopoly rule, everyone's rates are comparable

This is no longer true.  The law changed several years ago and there's now open competition in the auto insurance market.

Thanks for clarifying - I knew something changed a few years ago, but for some reason thought the non-competition thing was still mostly true!

I am currently paying around $111 for my car insurance. I find it a relatively cheap full coverage auto insurance. I got it from Progressive at it is for my 2010 Chrysler Serbing. I have it on a 6 month policy that covers bodily injury, liability and medical payments. I do not have the collision coverage though

  • I'd shop around no matter what.  You might not be able to get your car insurance down, but if you shop your homeowner's too you could get a good discount on that.  RocknVoll is right, MA is no longer so restrictive with car insurance policies, but the rates are still highly regulated so it is hard to find a deal.  Ask insurers about discounts for low mileage, commuting by public transit, and loyalty programs.  You may be able to save a little extra with some of these if you qualify.
  • We have Progressive and are paying a little over $1200/year. DH and I both have clean records - we live in the 'burbs and have an 06 Jetta and an 07 Accord. We were paying about $1100/year but we just have our policy renewal and rates went up $10 a month.

  • Woah, that's insanely expensive.  Our car is registered in Somerville (which has high rates because its an urban area) and we pay ~$750 per year for a '07 VW Jetta.  This includes a surcharge because we park on the street.  We have clean driving records and are 29 & 36.

I recently go ours lowered because we use the car so infrequently (~2000 miles per year).  When I told them that it knocked off about $20 per month.  I'm assuming you're in a similar situation living in the city, so maybe give that a try?

  • Yup, like everyone else said, I think that's high. DH and I both have 06 cars, we live in the suburbs, and pay $1,000/year for both cars.
  • A friend had a three or four year old Altima registered in the city (South Boston) a few years back, and she paid $1300/year. She was 28/29, and also had a clean driving record.  (I remember this, because my car was registered in Springfield, and I was paying more than her for an older car.)

I'd definitely shop around if I was you. And be sure to look into any possible discounts - AAA, low mileage, etc.

  • I would for sure shop around!

We just moved from NC to Boston. My insurance was with Progressive, when I got a new quote from them it DOUBLED!

We shopped around and realized everything was lower, and went with Liberty Mutual, have car insurance, renters insurance and jewelry policy for less then our NC car insurance annual premium.

Insurance premiums are always changing, never hurts to get a new quote.

  • Thanks everyone for responding!! You have been really helpful :)
  • That does seem way too high. See if you?ll get a better deal with The Hartford; we?ve been with them for a while and though we check the competition out every now and then, we?ve never found a provider who?ll give us such a decent rate for the amount of coverage we have. The offer free car insurance quotes so you should hit them up.
