Help! Cat related

So we have 3 cats and one is a senior so we started him on senior feed and the other two are on their own food. He's not happy that he can't have their food and won't really eat his senior food out of his new bowl. We've tried mixing a little of their food and his senior feed to ease him into some new food and it's not working really. Any suggestions? TIA!

Re: Help! Cat related

  • Is it dry kibble? Did the vet recommend switching him to the senior formula? In general, I don't think seniors need a separate type of food if they're otherwise healthy. If his metabolism is slowing down, I'd just feed less. Have you ever heard of Cat Chat? That lady is super hard core insistent that kibble is kitty crack and that wet or raw is the way to go. She cracks me up.

Yeah, it's dry kibble. He's been steadily losing muscle mass for a few years now (he's 13 now) so we're trying him on some senior food to help build it back up. Last time we took him to the vet he mentioned that we should look at some senior food for him (he was my mom's cat at the time and she didn't bother). Our other 2 cats enjoy his food more than he does

  • Have you tried adding wet food or canned tuna juice? How are his teeth?

His teeth are really good. We've done wet food before as a sort of treat, but he tends to eat himself sick with wet food.

  • I've never had any luck having individual bowls of food for our cats, I gave up and let them eat out of the same bowl.  My SIL needed to feed her cat a special food for his diabetes so she would seclude the cat in a room until he finished his special food and then do the same thing for the other cat who got normal food.  It's a PITA but the only real way to get the job done.

Can you call or email your vet and see if there's another food that all your cats can eat that will be beneficial to them all?

Unfortunately his vet went out of business so I've been looking around for a new one, I'm going to be taking him in a few weeks to get a check-up and I'll ask about the food. He's eat his food more now that I added more of his old food to it. The other 2 aren't eating his food since they keep getting shoved away from his bowl.

  • I've never had good luck getting multiple cats to eat different kinds of food.   Yeah, I guess you could physically separate them at meal time, and put them in different rooms.  But if you do more of a "buffet" style feeding, then there's really no good way to make sure they eat the food you want them to.

  • I agree about the wet vs. dry. Also, see if there's another brand. My cats are young but the little one doesn't like kibble at all and prefers the Ultra Premium flavor of Natural Balance food over everything else.

It can be a struggle to separate cats for feeding time. We spent months trying every which way with ours. What seems to be working at the moment is putting two chairs side by side, one cat per chair. They get up to 15-20 minutes to eat, although they're usually done sooner. They understand (through trial and error) that if they refuse their food, they get nothing else until the next feeding.

  • I recently had to change my cats' food, and I found a way to ease them into the new food that worked fairly well.  You should take about 7-10 days to ease them from one food to another.  Start with a bowl of his original food and add about half a handful of the new food.  The next day, make it a bit more.. until the ratio switches (the 2nd to last day should be mostly new food with a sprinkle of old food).  By the last day he should be used to the new food, and want to eat it.

Your cat has been eating the same food, with the same familiar smell and taste probably for years.  It will take him some time to get used to the new food.  Help him with the transition, because if your cat is anything like mine, he will be too stubborn to eat the new food straight away.  Good Luck!

Also, is there anyway all of your cats can eat the senior diet too?  My senior cat was just switched to an allergy food, and the vet said it was fine for my younger cat too.
