Hey ladies! We are finally settled in NYC and were super lucky to find an apartment that we love in a neighborhood that we love. It is 4 blocks from a huge 500+ acre park, which is great for taking Popeye for walks too.
So here is my issue......there is a little bit of grass in front of our apartment, but we are NOT allowed to let dogs go to the bathroom on it. They are supposed to go on the sidewalk/curb. This has been a battle with Popeye since we got here. We had practiced this at home before we left, but he is very stubborn and doesn't know any better, so he will hold it ALL DAY instead of going on the sidewalk. The first few days, I would walk him the 4 blocks to the park every time he had to pee so that he could go in the grass, but honestly, I am not willing to do that every single time.....he needs to learn how to go on concrete.
For the last 2 days, I have been waiting him out. Whenever he indicates that he needs to go out, I walk him out along the sidewalk and curb, and near some trees and encourage him to go. This morning, he actually went, and I gave him TONS of praise. Since then, he has indicated that he needs to go out 3 more times, but we go out, and he WILL NOT GO. I figure if he has to go bad enough, he will go, but I don't want to be cruel. I am just not sure how else to encourage him to go on the sidewalk/curb. WWYD?
He has been adjusting SO SO well, except for the potty thing. HELP!
Re: Dog Owners - WWYD??
Honestly, you're doing exactly what I'd be doing. Just keep taking him out and when he does go where he should, give him tons of "good boy" praise. Maybe bring some high value treats with you (I swear my dog would do anything for a piece of banana!) too. He'll get the hang of it!
Ugh. I hate that part about NYC - I was confused the first time I saw a "Curb Your Dog" sign... and then when I saw a person directing their dog to sht in the gutter... yuck.
But I would be doing exactly what you are doing. Eventually he'll start to understand that he's supposed to go exactly where you show him. Lots of praise, treats, and patience. I might even get him special, high-valued treats, that Pop would only get when he goes to the bathroom in the correct place. He's a smart guy, he'll figure it out...
