WWYD?

A little background:  I received a phone call last Tuesday from a principal, offering me a short-term (6 week) counselor position to fill in for a woman going on maternity leave.  She had received my name from another principal I interviewed with a week before.  I accepted the job and shared that I'd be out of town until Sunday.  She said she would email me with information on what to do.  I said a phone call would be fine, too.  I didn't receive either.

I emailed the principal last night and again this morning.  I also left her a voicemail this morning (at 9am), asking about paperwork, coming in tomorrow, etc.

I was planning on going in today since it's the first day of school in that district, but then figured that it being the first day, it'll be hectic.  The principal also mentioned in our initial (and only) phone call that she'd like me to start today to shadow the current counselor.  Since I hadn't heard anything, I wasn't sure what to do.  Maybe they're ironing out details within the district or with the current counselor.  I would've been frustrated had a driven all the way down there to turn around. If it wasn't a job in my field, I probably wouldn't worry/try this much, but it could open other doors once the 6 week  assignment is over.

Here it is, 12pm, and I haven't heard boo from the principal.  WWYD?  Should I show up tomorrow morning?  Should I wait to hear from her?  Should I try calling again?  Thanks for the help!

Re: WWYD?

  • I'm not excusing her lack of responsiveness or disorganization, but the first day of school (hell, the first MONTH of school) is very very hectic. Chances are, this principal is dealing with many new employees, parents and students who are freaked out, scheduling problems and other logistical nightmares, and probably less support staff than she's had before (if this is a public school). I wouldn't be surprised if she hasn't even gotten to your messages yet.

I would probably try calling again when I know school is out this afternoon to see if you can reach her then. If that doesn't work, I just might suck it up and drive over tomorrow (knowing that I may end up turning around and going right back home) to see if you can find someone in person who can give you some direction.

  • I would try reaching her again today, to see if it's just taken her a while to actually get back to her desk, since it is the first day of school.  If you can't reach her today, I would just make the trip to the school tomorrow morning.  I think it's better to be there and be turned away, then to not show up at all.

  • I would go in this afternoon once school is over. Tomorrow morning will only be hectic again and if you're supposed to be there tomorrow then you'll be running. Typically the afternoon once school has let out is a little easier to catch people.
  • Yeah, I hope you went in this afternoon. I'm sure she is swamped but you need to know what's going on. I'm trying to get a hold of administrators, too. Not fun. GL!!
  • An update:  I've attempted to call twice, but the office closes at 4pm.  I don't have the principal's direct line and I don't want to leave a voicemail on the main number and have it get lost/not given to principal.  I didn't head down there because I just saw these replies.  I plan to call tomorrow morning.  I know the first few weeks/month of school can be busy, but I think it's a bit weird that I haven't heard anything.

  • I think it's weird, too. Esp. since you were supposed to start work today. Maybe she figured you weren't available until a few days from now? Maybe she misunderstood your availability. I would imagine your calls are just getting lost in a huge glut of calls right now. Email would probably be similar. I would honestly go in first thing in the morning. As early as you can when someone would be there to let you in. I obviously wouldn't be anything but friendly and ready to work.

How strange :-/  I would probably go in person tomorrow and try to figure this out. I see the wisdom in both going early in the morning, or after school.

  • I get why I should go in and try to sort this out in person, but with things so up in the air, I'm going to attempt to contact the principal again tomorrow.  Yes, maybe not the most proactive approach, but I just don't feel right going in-that's just me.....
