First time to plant... ever!

I really love the idea of planting mums for the fall, but since it will be my first time I don't know where to begin.  Can anyone tell me what to do, step-by-step in layman's terms?  I've never planted anything in my entire life--so keep that in mind :-).  If it helps, I live in northern Mississippi.  Thanks!!

  • Oh, I was thinking about buying potted mums at Home Depot or Walmart.

  • I would suggest checking out your local garden centers / nurseries before going to the big box stores. Often times you'll be able to get a bigger/better/healthier plant more suited for your area for about the same price.

Mums do really well in pots. And they are easy to grow. Get pot, fill with soil, plop in a mum plant, done! After they are done blooming, you can cut off the dead flowers and usually get a second flush of blooms.
