Under the Sea...

I have a confession...

I have never eaten lobster.

I know, it's awful. I'm allergic to shrimp and crab so, I'm a bit nervous that I'm allergic to lobster as well. My mom hates seafood, so I never had it growing up....and my DH loves it, so he's given me the task of cooking and eating lobster.

(side note: I only get a slight rash and a bit of swelling when eating crab and shrimp, so it's not life threatening.)

Have you ever cooked lobster? What was your first time experience? Do you have any tips?

Any great recipes that show case the lobster well, or happen to be favorites?

Thanks!

Re: Under the Sea...

  • I usually let the husband cook it since I dont like looking at it alive...

That being said- yum! I love Lobster.

This is a good visual link: http://www.lobsterhelp.com/boiling-lobster.html

  • If possible, see if where you buy the lobster from will cook it for you. I always hate the faint screeching sound they make when you boil them (yes, they do make a sound) as well as hearing them clawing at the pot trying to escape.

wait, you live in the Northeast and don't like lobster?!  Do you even know how lucky you are to live so close to that kind of seafood?

  • I think I remember readins somewhere that if you put them in the freezer for jsut a few minutes, it like puts the lobsters into a coma-like state.  most humane way to do things, then they don't really feel a thing when they get dropped into the water.  And no screaming.

oh MB... such a tragedy.  Wanna trade places?!  I'd kill for a lobster roll right now.

  • Last week I had only my second full lobster eating experience, but we cheated and had them steamed at the store we bought them from.  I don't think I could ever boil them myself, for most of the reasons above.  But, yum, they are delish!

Cracking them and everything adds to the experience and all, but it can be messy and kind of a pain. Personally, if I have my choice when eating out I usually go for lobster casserole or "lazy lobster" (all the meat, no shells, sauteed in butter).  Yum.  Lobster ravioli is also a good way to introduce yourself to the taste of lobster.

I didn't eat lobster or a lot of seafood until my late teens, but hey, anything is good when it is dipped in butter:)

  • So...

    After I boil this lobster.....

How do I eat it? How do I get the meat out?

I've read a little bit on Google, but I'm confused. Do I just break the shell? Are their parts that you can't/shouldn't eat?

....What do you serve with lobster?

    I'm a lobster virgin.

The claws and tail are the best.  I kind of stay away from most of the upper body/head area, which seems like it might be a waste, but I dunno I am not that experienced.   You should definitely be able to find video tutorials online, which would be your best bet.  You'll need lobster crackers and some picks.

Last week we had baked potatoes and corn on the cob with them.  But it got can really messy, so we all kind of ate all of the lobster first, then had the potatoes and corn.
