Murder mystery dinner party?

Anyone ever throw one?

I'm hosting a dinner party for my mom's 70th birthday in October and was looking for a fun idea for 10 adults, 6 kids, ages 5-13....

Wondering if anyone has any ideas, websites, pointers, etc...

Thanks!

Re: Murder mystery dinner party?

  • This is one where you really need to know your audience.  If you think your family would be into it go for it.  I'd also check with the parents of the 5 yo.  They may not want to have their kid exposed to that.

It's not something my family would enjoy

  • I have never thrown one, but I attended one and it was tons of fun.

The host of the party went all out, which really helped get everyone in the mood. Everyone was in costume. She had a bar with special drinks that all fit the theme of the murder mystery. The meal was served halfway through our game and it also fit the theme of the night. She even had a friend who was a local cop come in uniform to "arrest" the "murderer" at the end of the evening.

I would suggest if you're going to do a party like this to go all out. If you don't I think it will be a lot more difficult for your guests to get into it.

Also, the one we had had X number of key players and then Z number of extra players that aren't necessary. I would recommend trying to find a game that had less key players than you plan on having and giving the extra players to quieter guests. This way if they feel uncomfortable at first while they are warming up it won't matter. Also, if someone unexpectedly doesn't come it wont' really matter.

    Please pass the ice cream.
  • Oh cool, thanks for the info!  My family is a little nutty, and totally into stuff like this.  I figure we can do a little side fun for the kids, like searching for clues or something, while the adults have all the fun.  Love the touch with the cop!

    Thanks for sharing your experience!
