Can you ID this tree? I want one!

I would love to have one of these trees or a bush with the same color leaves.  Does anyone know of a medium sized bush/shrub (3-10ft) with burgandy coloring that isn't a barberry?  We live in DC Metro (zone 6b/7a).  It would be in Full Sun.

  • Almost looks like a non-fruit bearing plum tree. They are all over here, and would work well in full sun.
  • we had a tree that looked like this in our yard that was a choke cherry.  Though we are in zone 2 or 3 so the example you gave might not be that.  I would be split between a flowering plum (like the pp suggested) or the choke cherry.  Does it have little berries?

Ditto this post, I'm in northern cali, where it gets up to 115 degrees, and they thrive here

I agree, it is a purple leaf plum.

There are also purple leaf sand cherries, which are large shrubs with purple foliage. I have never seen a Choke Cherry tree with purple leaves. You might also look into Physocarpus or Weigela species, many of which have purple foliage.

  • Not the one in the pic, but maybe a Japanese maple would fit your criteria. I think they are really pretty!

  • Purple leaf plum. I have 3. Not a fan.
  • There's also purple smoke tree. My neighbors have one that I covet.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
