Road trip with LO

Have any of you done a road trip with your little ones? We are leaving tomorrow for Wisconsin (11-12 hrs) and C is 10 1/2 months old. Our plan as of now is to drive as far as we can tomorrow night. Of course we'll stop to change him, get gas, and let him get out. Then we'll finish the drive Thursday morning. Any suggestions/advice for us?

Re: Road trip with LO

  • We have done 2 long road trips (9 hours) w/M. Last year she was 15 months. We had a little portable DVD player for her which helped a lot. I also sat in the backseat so I could keep her entertained and feed if I needed to. We broke our trip up so we wouldn't have to drive all of it in one day.

This year though was so much better. She was older and more independent. I hope the trip goes smoothly for you!

  • I meant to say that we are staying the night tomorrow night in a hotel after we drive as long as we can with him. Same with our trip back. I was thinking about a DVD player, but he doesn't watch TV right now as it is, so I don't know if it would even help or if he would watch. Also, my sister is going with us, so she will be back there with him.

  • We drove to FL w/ a 12 mo old and 30 month old in April.  We brought board books, baby "treats" (the puff things and cheerios), and some portable toys with us (mostly things that make noise or have blinking lights) as well as her sleeping animal.

If your LO has a schedule, I'd try to keep to it as much as possible within the car trip (like meals at certain times, etc.).  We left super-early in the morning - 4a - and tried not to wake her up much so she would go back to sleep until breakfast time.  We drove almost 15 hours the first day, but we stopped for about 45 minutes for each meal/stretching and tried to time gas/bathroom breaks with meals for the most part.

    GL!!
