What is your opinion on Spring?

Anyone live there? Love it? Hate it? How is the commute to the city? What is there to do there?

Re: What is your opinion on Spring?

  • We live in Spring... we live in Klein ISD though, not Spring ISD.  We love love love our neighborhood.  We're pretty close to the middle point between 45 and 249.

I commute to the Greenway Plaza area and it takes me about 50 minutes, leaving at 6am (this includes dropping kids off).  To downtown, about 35 minutes.

On the weekends, everything we need is within 5 miles of our house.  We have a pretty active neighborhood association and have family events pretty regularly for the neighborhood.  Next year, my street and the street that I am on the corner of are having a block party for July 4th and I'm super excited about it! lol

My kids run and play up and down our street with all the other kids and they do so without me being overly worried about something happening to them because the entire neighborhood looks out for each other... Very much like when I was growing up.

We're close to two malls and loads of casual and nice restaurants... even walking distance to a couple.

The elementary school we are zoned to is fabulous and what I've seen so far of the middle school has been super.  My neighbors with kids in high school, have nothing but good things to say about it as well.

  • Darva - it sounds like you live very close to where I grew up!

I went to Doerre Middle School and Klein HS-loved them both. The schools are wonderful and there is everything you need within your "bubble". Even more so now than when I grew up. The spring cypress/Louetta area by Champions Forest is growing really fast and has a lot of new stores and restaurants.

The only con I would list would be the commute to downtown. I lived with my Dad in Spring when I interned downtown and the commute down I-45 was a nightmare. But lots of people do it every day or you can take the bus.

  • I grew up in Spring and moved just a few miles north to The Woodlands. Depending on what you want, they both have their ups and downs, but both are great. I like living in TW better bc I don't feel like I live in a "neighborhood," I can bike anywhere I want. Taxes and insurance are cheaper here in Montgomery Co. Depending on where you are going in town, there is the Woodlands Express bus.

  • We are technically in Spring, a few miles down Rayford, almost to Riley Fuzzel. We love the convenience of having everything close by and being so close to shopping and entertainment in The Woodlands. DH commutes downtown daily. He mostly takes the Woodlands Express bus which is $10 roundtrip daily. There is a park n' ride location on Sawdust as well as others in The Woodlands proper. It's about a 30 minute bus ride. If DH drives in, he takes the Hardy Toll Road which is about 5 minutes away from us. That trip takes about 30 minutes also.
  • We have lived in Spring for 6.5 years.  We like that everything we need is nice and close.  I don't have to drive in town, so I don't know about commuting.

  • We've lived in Spring/Klein for about a year and a half now.  I neither like it or dislike it.  It's a suburb.  Everything we need is close by and our public school options are way  better here than they would have been in our old neighborhood near the Heights.  The commute however is horrible.  DH works downtown and it takes him and hour each way in the summer and an hour and fifteen minutes when school is in session.

  • The two malls, are you guys referring to Woodlands and Deerbrook? Thanks everyone for your input, keep it coming!

I live almost equal distance from Willowbrook Mall and The Woodlands Mall.  If you lived on the East Side of Spring (East of 45), you'd be closer to Deerbrook than Willowbrook.

We're zoned to KCHS.  I would have been okay with KHS too, though!

  • In all honesty, one of the reasons we moved out of Spring was b/c the school district was going downhill.  Personally, I would not want to be zoned to Spring ISD.

That's exactly why we stayed in Klein!  Although some parts of SISD are okay, a good majority are just so-so. :/

This. I grew up in Spring and went to Westfield High School - it was okay when I was there, significantly worse when my younger brother graduated in 2007, and seemingly even worse now. We grew up in a nicer neighborhood on the north side of 1960 which does have nice older homes - but you couldn't pay me to live in that area or deal with 1960 between 45 and Steubner Airline ever again.

My preference for that area would be something zoned to Klein ISD and a neighborhood closer to the Champions area or Louetta/Cypresswoodish area closer to 249/Vintage Park.

Or, if you can swing the commute -  The Woodlands proper, hands down. We so miss living up there - but our vehicles do not miss the added mileage! *sigh*

  • I grew up in Spring/Klein, and am a product of KOHS.  I taught in Spring ISD for 5 years and do not recommend ANYWHERE in the Spring district for your kids.  The district is rapidly going downhill due to terrible leadership and lack of consistency among the schools.  The demographics have become atrocious as well and I do not believe that it's a very safe place to live.  I would advise staying west of 45 and north of 1960, however the area of Spring (not SISD) around Rayford & Riley Fuzzell seems to be really nice and are zoned to Conroe ISD schools.

If I were to return to teaching I would fight tooth and nail to get back in Klein ISD, where I taught for 1 year.  Much better reputation and I agree with their educational leadership and philosophies SO much more.

My parents still live in the house I grew up in, way north on Kuykendahl, and it has grown up so much, there are tons of places to grocery shop, eat out, movie theaters are super convenient, and the Woodlands Mall & Market Street are great.  It's an easy drive to Willowbrook if you need to go over there for anything.  If you take the Hardy Toll Road or Sam Houston Toll Road you can get around easily.

  • Thanks for your input everyone!

I, too, went to KOHS!  Agree that Klein is significantly better than Spring.  I'm not sure the current status of the 4 high schools, but KO, KC and K are the best of the four.  Usually KF was considered the problem child, but that doesn't mean it's not a good school by any means.

My parents live North of 2920 (which is the same house I grew up in).  Each time I'm there, and we drive the trek home, I'm glad I live where I do now.  It's just our personal preference to be so far from town.  That said, if we worked in the Woodlands or something, obviously we would feel differently.  If we had jobs in that area, it would make complete sense for us to be up there, too, seeing as how my family (mom, dad, aunt, uncle, gma) are all up there.

I think it's a great area, but it's all relative to where you work and what kind of drive you're willing to endure.
