PSA: Friday memorial ride = potential large traffic problems

DH just forwarded me an email that his company just sent to all employees. Thought I'd share. I don't know anything about this ride but it looks like it could impact tomorrow's evening commute. There are links at the bottom to WaPo and WTOP. Grreeaatttttt...

The America?s 911 Foundation has organized a motorcycle remembrance ride estimated to have 1,800+ riders. The ride will be heading East towards the Pentagon/Arlington area Friday afternoon, August 19. The ride will use the Dulles Toll Road then route 66. It is estimated that the riders could stretch 15 miles long and have severe impact to Friday evening?s rush. Due to the size it is expected to impact the Dulles Toll Road and routes 66 & 395, and access to both the Dulles and Reagan Airports.

The remembrance ride will leave the Arlington area early Saturday morning to head to New York.

Below are several links to more information in re to this remembrance ride. If these areas involve your commute home Friday evening, I recommend you look into more information from these links.

Re: PSA: Friday memorial ride = potential large traffic problems

  • 15 South will be closed from the MD/VA boarder to downtown Leesburg then on over to the toll road.  That's basically the only way for DH to get home from work.  He told his boss today that he will be coming home early since it would take 3-4 times as long for him to go around the closed area.

At least it's closed for a good cause and not something stupid, and with plenty of advanced notice.

  • This was just sent around my office as well.  I would have known nothing about this if it wasn't for our 'caual' listserv...

    From the Post:

"The potential for gridlock Friday afternoon is of such concern that the U.S. Office of Personnel Management ?strongly urges? federal employees to telework or take leave. A Virginia highway spokeswoman advised all Northern Virginia commuters to treat Friday as a snow day and work from home."

"Major delays are expected in Northern Virginia between noon and 7 p.m. Friday. Though the ride will take place mostly on major highways ? the Dulles Greenway, the Dulles Toll Road, Interstate 66 and Route 110 South ? backups from the closures are likely to spill over onto the Capital Beltway, the George Washington Parkway and many local roads, officials said.  "

  • Thanks for posting. My SIL and niece are flying into Reagan tomorrow at 5:30pm so this is good to know.

  • honestly, i don't get this.  it's not even september yet.  and i think that better time & energy could be spent in honoring/remembering those that lost their lives on 9/11 as well as all first responders.

    i'm probably just being a cold-hearted, insensitive b!tch though.

  • I just forwarded this to our HR director. I hadn't heard anything about it.

I'm with you.  It seems there are better ways to honor those lost.  What I find craziest is that the local municipalities are actually closing roads to other traffic for this to happen.  And, on a Friday afternoon in one of the top 5 most gridlocked cities.  Could this have not happened on a weekend?

  • Do you all find the Memorial Weekend Vietnam Vet ride/parade to be a waste of time too?  Yeah, Friday afternoon is not great timing, I agree there, but August is typically a big vacation time, meaning less traffic anyway, and it's headed into the District not out as most commuters do.  There's no school buses/routes to interrupt yet, which is probably another reason it's so early.  And, really, any time/day around here is bad for traffic save 3 am.

I feel like it's not really up to me to decide what is an appropriate way for people to honor those they have lost.  I was annoyed and then I thought "Well, I'd rather be inconvenienced by traffic going around the ride than in the ride because I lost someone."  It's all about perspective I guess.

what can i say? you're a better person than i am

  • I think i'm with Kastle on this one, especially since 9/11 is a Sunday this year.
  • I think Rolling Thunder is a little bit different. They don't just ride in all at once... they come in to the city on their own time and the *actual* ride is held on a Sunday. In the days leading up to Rolling Thunder you'll see bikers trickle in and then they stay in nearby hotels. I live near Crystal City and saw a ton all of them at all the different hotels. No roads are shut down until Sunday. The event tomorrow shuts down roads on a weekday for all of these people to ride in at the same time. I guess I understand that they needed to come in when they did so they could make it to all three locations over 3 days but I do find that they should have planned better.

No, Rolling Thunder doesn't bother me, since it's on a weekend, and it doesn't disrupt an entire metro area.  If you aren't involved or interested, you barely notice it's happening.  But this will disrupt EVERYONE in the area -- people who work in the city, people who work in the burbs, people who stay home will all hit major gridlock if they want to go anywhere tomorrow afternoon and evening.  I don't think that it will make one bit of difference that they are travelling "against" traffic -- traffic on 66 becomes a nightmare during the day in both directions when 1 car breaks down and is pulled over to the side.  I'm pretty sure 1,800 bikes will be a bit worse for everyone.

Again, the idea of the ride, while not my style for honoring those lost, is fine for those who choose to participate.  It's the fact that the logistics of it will impact LOTS and LOTS of people who aren't involved or interested in honoring people in that way that bothers me.

  • The logistics have been worked on for months, not that it makes them perfect by any means.  The only way to not disrupt people would be to do it at 3 am, and then people would probably complain about the noise.  They were going to go around downtown Leesburg but then residents got upset since they like the town being a part of the ride and got the council to change it's stance and allow them in.  Maybe it's because I've known about it longer or whatever, but I just find it really petty to be complaining about traffic disruptions (in a town that already has them practically every hour of the day anyway, it's already a part of normal everyday life down here to get stuck in traffic) when it's to honor nearly 3,000 lost lives.  An afternoon of being stuck in traffic is better than never seeing your mother, father, husband, wife, etc again.  Big picture and all.  Maybe I should go make that my Thankful Thursday.

    YesYes  Especially the bold part.

  • but why pick a random day?

the weekend of sept 11 seems like it would have been way more appropriate.

I am with you two. What exactly does a motorcycle ride on a Friday in August have to do with September 11th and what Virginia officials approved the roads being closed?

I guess I am more of the type of person who thinks that doing community service is a better way to pay tribute.

The website for the ride says they don't do it then out of respect for the ones close to those who were killed, so they didn't bog down the sites.

  • hopefully we won't get a repeat performance of last nights weather (which they are calling for again). that would be a total mess!
  • I wish they would have done it on a Saturday but I can see why they are not doing it on 9/11 weekend since that will probably have a ton of traffic issues on it's own.  I just changed worksites for the day and am leaving early but I know not everyone can do that and it is going to suck for them.

Luckily I'm not affected, but I agree. I get why they're doing it and when, but the inconvenience to so many others really seems to outweigh (and detract from) the event itself.

I'm not going to be stuck in traffic, but I agree with you guys. And of course today is the only day this week DH has to go to the office, so if he can't leave at at a good time (he's at the mercy of his superiors right now) and gets stuck, then I am screwed because I can't leave for work and then the coworkers I am relieving are stuck too. Maybe it won't be the traffic nightmare they are predicting.
