Calling all Chicago foodies!

I think input from the trendy locals would be best!  Appreciate the help :-)

The hubs & I are heading to Chicago for the weekend soon, definitely one of our favorite places!  I'm looking for recommendations on the best places to eat while there.  We already are planning on trying The Bongo Room for breakfast & Bull and Bear for brunch or dinner another day.  We are NOT Cheesecake Factory or (gasp!) Chicago style pizza fans.  I'm excited to try what you recommend!

P.S.- WE recommend Coco Pazzo Cafe on St. Clair.  Pricey, but by far THE BEST spaghetti I have ever had, mmm!

Re: Calling all Chicago foodies!

  • You've come to the right girl! We moved here in December and have been eating our way through the Chicago foodie scene - we've been to over 100 restaurants since we moved here. Here are some highlights:

If you're thinking Italian, Volare is BY FAR the best Italian I've ever had. They are in Streeterville. Ah-may-zing risotto. Phenomenal bolognese. For more 'chic' Italian, Cibo Matto at the Wit Hotel is awesome as well. They do infused cotton candy. It's awesome!

My personal favorite restaurant in Chicago is Mercadito. It's an upscale taco restaurant with some of the best artisan tacos in the world.

Another great one in the West Loop is Province. Small plates, amazing lamb. Great atmosphere.

Something unusual, I think is Bin 36 in River North. They have amazing entrees, but what they're known for are their cheese flights. So so yummy.

Let me know if you're looking for a specific type of food and I can point you in the right direction!

  • We are more bar style people, and love to try new beers.  Anything with a cool atmosphere to it as well.  The most we have ever paid and felt comfortable with is around $150 for the two of us, including tip.  I try to stick to a vegan diet, though once in a while I'll stray and eat fish or a little dairy.  I'm noticing that most restaurants in the Chicago area are very vegan friendly.  Any suggestions based on that?

Also, last time we were in town, we walked to Howl at the Moon, only to wait in line for 30 minutes without moving, and left.  Are there any times that we wouldn't have to wait so long to get in?  Other than a weeknight that is (we'll be in town next Fri-Mon afternoon).

  • The Violet Hour in Wicker Park for cocktails. You won't regret it.

Lula Cafe in Logan Square for any meal. Absolutely fantastic. After you eat, visit La Boulangerie just around the corner for French pastries. You can get a fabulous cup of coffee from the coffee shop (New Wave) next door.

Owen & Engine is a British gastropub in Bucktown that has an excellent selection of beer and the best fish and chips you'll taste this side of the pond.

Revolution Brewing in Logan Square is where you will find beer that can make you cry. It's that good. They brew it in house. The food is phenomenal and you will absolutely find vegan fare there.

Sultan's Market in Wicker Park has wonderful Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food and has many vegan options for you.

The Handle Bar in Wicker Park has vegan options and a great beer selection.

If you're on a vegan diet, definitely try The Chicago Diner - it's fantastic diner food, but done in a vegan way. Also, Karyn's Cooked is in the West Loop. Awesome vegan place. You're right in that most CHI restaurants will have vegan options for you.

As far as wait times, if you can, definitely try to make reservations. Use www.opentable.com and you can reserve most restaurants in Chicago. That will alleviate a lot of stress for you on the waiting in line stuff.
