cover letter/relocating

My husband and I are wanting to relocate to either Chicago or Pittsburgh or somewhere in between (my family is in Chicago, his in Pittsburgh) from Nebraksa so we have both recently started looking into job openings. 

We lived in Indiana up until 2 years ago when the company I worked for went out of buisness.  Since my salary is the larger of the two and mainly pays our bills (his we use for savings, vactions, retirement) we moved where I could find a new job which meant moving to Nebraska.  Now that we have both been at our current jobs for just over 2 years and the market in my field of work has been getting stronger we would like to move back to be closer to our families.  Had my company not closed down we never would have left in the first place and plan for moving back to be permanent

My question is should I address the reason for relocating in my cover letter or not mention it at all?  I only ask because when we lived in Indiana and I was looking nationally for any job I could find it seemed like I got alot of resistance/questions about why we were relocating so I didn't know if I should address it up front or wait until asked this time around.  Plus now that we both have jobs and it isn't a necessity to find new jobs we will be much pickier about what positions we apply for so I want to give myself the best possible chance at interest on the company part as possible.

  • Yes I'd address it. Are you expecting relocation or are you willing to relocate yourself?

  • It obvioulsy would be nice to get some type of relocation expenses if it is something that the firm/company typical provides but it is not a necessity or deal breaker for me if it will not be provided.

    How would you phrase it in the cover letter? Just that your looking to relocate to the Chicgoland area? (or whereever the job happens to be located) or would you elaborate and say you are looking to relocate to be near family?

    On one hand I could see saying you are relocating to be close to family to be a good thing as to me it makes it sound like the relocation would be more permenant as opposed to someone just looking for a change of pace that might up and move agian in two years when they get bored with the location, etc.  But I can also see were that infomation might be crossing into the too much info about personal life area.

  • I would definitely mention it in your cover letter.  I worked as a recruiter and we usually excluded candidates from outside a certain radius if they did not mention relocation in the cover letter. 

    I actually just went through the same thing and I had this line in the first paragraph of my cover letter:

     "I am seeking a new position as I am originally from S_____ and will be permanently relocating back to the area this August. "

  • Then I'd mention it, but not mention family. As the pp noted, state that you're planning to relocate to [Area] in [Month].

  • I recently relocated from Minneapolis to Chicago, and I always said this:

    Though I am currently located in Minneapolis, I am in the process of relocated to Chicago and can be available for travel to Chicago for an in-person interview and/or Skype video calling.
