Middle Name Question

[I changed the title because I realized its not really a poll........ its a question... I need a half-caf latte for sure]

Back info: we've had Rider picked out for a middle name for a while now (family name), but we also wanted to honor my brother who passed while we were in high school, his name was Mikey (well, Michael), so we were thinking about making them both his middle name. So his middle name combo would be Michael Rider.

Both names that we are thinking about as well as our last name has two syllables. If that helps anyone out.

My questions are: do you think two middle names is too much? What happens when he has to get something monogrammed one day? What about those forms that ask for a middle initial? Do you pick one or just write M.R.?

I also want your opinions on first names, but Matt wants us to keep them from everyone until we choose... -_-

Re: Middle Name Question

  • I have two middle names. I just use the initial of the first one (M.) as my middle initial. When writing the whole thing out, I hypenate. (Mary-Irene).

My sister has two middle names as well, and she does the same. (uses K. as her inital, and writes it out as Kathryn-Elizabeth).

  • When I got married I added my maiden as a middle so I use both for everything, including initials.  When I write it out I don't hyphenate.  I don't think it is that unusual, so I'd do what you want with the name.

  • I kept my maiden name as a second middle name. I sign things with both initials and when I write it out I do not hyphenate.

  • Like Mary & Jill, I too kept my maiden name as a second middle name, and when I write it out I use two middle initials.  The only downside to two middle names though?  A lot of online questionaires, and agencies such as the Registry of Motor Vehicles, don't allow room for 2 middle initials, so I find myself using middle initial and 2 last names more often than not.  I've just resigned myself to this.

I do the same - or I drop my first middle name. I just can't part with my maiden name. My license says Jill M. LastName and it annoys me that my maiden name isn't on there.

You could have thrown Maiden Name to the Last Name section... they would have hyphenated it, but that's what I did.  I figured its better than not, ya know?

Yeah, I had Jill M.L. LastName written on the application but the dweeb just put M into the computer. In 4 years when I go to renew I'll change it up.

  • I had no DMV issues in MO or VA- they write out the middle names on everything so my drivers license says Mary Middle Maiden Married.

That sounds like the debacle I had with getting "ED" off of my license.  Stupid RMV.

  • My brother has 2 middles names so he is Nicholas Phillip-Lloyd lastname. He has never had an issue with it being too much since he just goes by Nick. On any important form he just uses P as a middle initial. In fact his high school diploma has his full name on it too, so it works for him!

  • DS has two middle names. His first, middle and last name all have two syllables. Hunter David Robert Lastname.

H and BIL have two middle names and just use the intial of the 'first' one.

  • I will say, growing up with two middle names is tres' different from adding another name when you're an adult. Why, you ask? because you have to learn to spell your long-ass name when you're in kindergarten, your full name won't fit on your driver's license, your monogram looks funny....etc.

I bet it's similar to having two first names... yeah sure, "MaryBeth" is a nickname, but growing up my mother always had it spelled "Mary Beth" so when someone would call me Mary, it would catch me offguard.  Thus, the combo.  *POW*

Same here, except I had DMV issues....they WOULDN'T let me make my maiden name a second middle name, so now I have 2 last names and I hate it. BUT, I still want to move my maiden to a 2nd middle. On my bank stuff (cuz they're the only place that let me do this) my name is Mallory A.R. Lastname. Which is how I wanted it in the first place. Damn DMV.....And when confronted with the middle initial I figure I'd just use the A and leave it at that.
