My husband and I are FINALLY going to buy a new TV. The one we've been using I got before I went off to college (15 years ago) and it only has one input-jack, is 20 inches and just plain old and awful. It still works just fine, but when I see what is out there now - and the picture quality - it makes my old set look absolutely ancient!
So we are going to upgrade - but neither of us have a clue about flat-screens! We aren't gamers and we don't even have cable/dish - thus we don't need "the world's best" - but we would like a decent 46inch 1080 p (read that was good, but really don't know what it means! ) - - probably LCD, but not fully opposed to plasma.
Also related and important is getting a decent sound-system (separate home theatre system, I guess) as H is a musician and is very sensitive/picky about that sort of thing.
We are probably going to go to Sears or Best Buy and would like to keep it under $1000 - maybe a little more once the home theatre stuff is added in.
Any recommendations or shopping advice is GREATLY appreciated! I really don't trust all the gimmicks of salesmen, so outside/independent advice and reviews matter much more!
Thanks!
Re: Flat Screen TV advice/recs?
We just bought a new Samsung LCD, but it was a little more than $1,000 because we went with the 3D version. I like it a lot, so I can recommend the Samsung brand. Best Buy had a bundle where we got the Blu-ray player and surround sound system included in the price.
Before this one we had a Philips plasma for 7 years that was great, so I can recommend that too.
SO did some research and we decided to not get the store service plan, which can add over $200 to your total... the reviews say if these TVs are going to have problems, it will be within the first year of use, which is already covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
We have a Samsung 50' Plasma - but the only reason we got it was because we got a pretty good deal on it.
My parents have an "off brand" (I can't remember what it is) but when H was looking at how to calibrate it for them, it basically has the same stuff inside as a "big name brand" (So don't be scared because it's not a big name)
Basically as long as you calibrate it correctly you should be happy. (and pretty much ANYTHING will look better than what you have - even right out of the box)
People pay a ridiculous amount of money to have people come out and correctly calibrate their TV's to the right settings, and then sometimes people will post the settings on forums. (You may need to adjust a bit here and there depending on the light of your room and what not but it will help a lot)
The only downside of our TV that I can tell is that since it's a plasma it lets of a LOT of heat.

he pretty much says to stay away from plasma, also. as much as he would love a 3d, he says that they are still relativly new, and they are still working kinks out so he doesnt want to buy one for a while still.
and my parents, bless their little hearts, have decent tv. and they have none of the hd channels, which defeats the purpose of getting a high def tv so make sure you up grade your tv package...
