Work

1st time managing people and have been at it for 3 years. My reporting manager keeps changing and I can't take the shifts in managing styles. I"m exhausted.

How do you determine how to manage in an environment where it's clear that there's a lot of management in-fighting? Where managers think it's appropriate to belittle their employees, their colleagues and their managers?

  • This is tough. I would just say in a culture like this, you have to try to be the voice of reason. Do your best to put your best foot forward, manage with compassion and be the person in the office who doesn't join the group in belittling everyone.

Aristotle said, "Pleasure in the job, perfection in the work." And my theory has always been that you can't always have both. And when that's true, you have to focus on one or the other. So if, at this moment, you cannot have pleasure in the job, then work very diligently at achieving perfection in the work.

And keep your eyes open for new opportunities!
