This morning DH and I sat down and review the holiday time we have left for the year. After a long discussion, we have decided to go home for the holidays. This means splitting time between our families who live in different states. We found tickets and booked them! Yay!!
And we've come up with a plan! Some of you may recall, we had a bad experience in 2009 and didn't go back in 2010. This was mainly due to DH's side because everyone was upset that we weren't able to spend as much time as possible with them -- parents, siblings, friends, etc.
This year we are renting a car and laying down grounds rules. We have four days in each location. We will not drive five hours to see you, if you want to see us, come and see us. We are spending one day with friends and will be telling family in advance.
Rather than flying to my parents, we are going to do the seven hour drive. It saved us a ton of $$, but will also give us some time alone together and breathing room. The drive is really easy, all 95 mainly, and having a car will be worth every penny. Plus my cousin works at a car rental company and get a huge discount and will arrange everything.
I am so excited, but feel really good that we have a plan of how to handle everyone. I actually think not going home last year was really good for us and for our families. It helped them understand that we won't/can't always do just what everyone wants us to do and we need to do what is best for us.
