I want to learn to knit!
When I was little my grandma tried to teach me how to knit, but it was a dismal failure. Now that I'm older, I want to learn how. Does anyone have any awesome books or tips or something to get me started? I don't want to invest a ton of money or anything up front in case it was a dismal failure because I just really suck at it.

The good news is it's a cheap hobby to try out because all you really need is a pair of needles and some yarn. Patterns and lessons are free online.
This book is the only reason I know how to cast off.
I agree that the patterns and info from the book can be found online, though.

i learned in high school in an elective class.. i can only do straight lines scarves and blankets lol.. but i find it easier to watch a video on youtube, then trying to read instructions, they use abbreviations, and such..
Youtube really helped me get the basics down, but it still took me a while to get it. I think I tried and then put it away 3 different times before I felt comfortable starting a real project. What really helped me was learning to recognize what the stitches look like, so I could tell what I had done and where I was in the pattern.
