side eye in my BF class today

Nothing like coming in (a few minutes late where the class has already started) to your breast feeding class and noticing that two seats down from you is a 16 year old student that you taught last semester.  Indifferent

I guess that explains why she transferred into our "alternative" school about a month or two into the semester.  Talk about awkward.  Both my husband and I had both taught her but she pretended like she didn't know us and didn't make eye contact.

Re: side eye in my BF class today

  • Oh yikes! At least she plans on breastfeeding. I've got friends my age who are 'grossed out' by it. At our prenatal classed there were 3 girls who were definitely still in highschool, 2 of which had their moms there instead of their boyfriends.

  • That would be kinda awkward! But I agree with what Caitlyn said, at least she is planning to BF!

  • Definitely awkward.  Why did she go to an alternative school?

  • Very awkward, but I'm totally impressed she's planning on breastfeeding and even taking a class about it.  Good for her.  Hopefully having a baby will help her grow up and she'll be a great mom.

  • Totally awkward. But like everyone else has said, at least she's taking a class and planning on BF and trying to learn. Hopefully she'll be a good mom and do well with all the responsibility a child brings.

  • I agree that it is awesome she was at the class and taking steps towards being a good mother.  She was there with her own mom who participated quite actively :)

As for the alternative school thing: I teach in a Catholic school.  Does that say enough?  My husband and I (he also teaches at the same school) were just discussing how we have never seen a visibly pregnant student, ever, in our 5 + years of teaching there.  While there is no formal policy that I'm aware of, I'd be interested to know how the administration deals with that.  We have cyber school and outreach where students go and learn at their own pace and I would guess they are *strongly* encouraged to do one of those.

This girl and her sister missed tons of school previously anyways due to always being "sick" so most of their teachers had been encouraging them to do outreach or cyber school where they could go at their own pace.  Because of that I never thought anything of it when she finally switched.  The pregnancy makes more sense though because her sister stayed in our school.

  • Catholic School was what I thought as soon as I posted the question.

  • I went to a Catholic school for 12 years. I also NEVER saw anyone or even knew of anyone who was pregnant. I'd like to be perfectly in denial and say they didn't leave.....
  • You guys would be absolutely SHOCKED at the number of pregnant girls that got put on homebound school for six weeks at our high school this past year.  Hell, I'm even decidedly public schooled and am from a fairly not nice HS and I was shocked.

  • I know it happens because I've taught a couple of different girls who had kids, but it was fairly early in my teaching career so I don't know what they would have done while pregnant, but I'm guessing not be at the school.

This is coming from the same school where the guidance councillors encourage gay students not to come out of the closet until after high school.  Because it saves them from the ridicule.....yeah right....

So many things that irk me about the Catholic school system.

  • Oh goodness... yeah, awkward.

I have THREE of my senior girls pregnant already and it's only the first week of school... sigh.... oh, and one of our juniors is on her SECOND child... just makes me shake my head....

  • That's so sad! I bet she was very embarrassed to see her teachers there. Poor girl.

I went to a Catholic high school.  There was one girl in our class who was pregnant our junior year.  And then I think I remember a girl in a class or two below me getting pregnant.  It's a fairly small school - about 400 total.

I'm sure if was very awkward for both you and the girl to see each other.

  • It's not just a Catholic school thing I don't think. When I graduated the girl who I sat next to was 38 weeks pregnant, and she told me that ever since one of the teachers had found out that she was KU, they were trying to get her to leave the school, and go to Off Campus even though she wasn't due until early July (although it didn't give her a lot of time).

Also, another girl who wasn't due until October was being pressured to transfer as well, even though she was no where near due at graduation.

It was kind of funny though, because the school had always preached abstinence (posters and all) until the first girl refused to transfer. A couple weeks later there were posters for condoms and the pill all over the school.

  • I hid my pregnancy at school for this very reason!  I finished my school work at about 6 months pregnant and walked the stage at graduation exactly one month to the day before Will was born.  I think they were suspicious at graduations, but I hid it quite well the rest of the time.
