Hi! I just finished book 1 (Storm in June) and am struggling a bit. I think part of it might be timing. My mind has sort of been in a lot of directions since I started it last Monday
.
I also think the "incompleteness" is somewhat apparent--some things that happen seem really abrupt and I think Nemirovsky probably would have polished those edges. You might have mentioned this in your review.
I keep calling this "the last fun book" because I imagine novel reading will get pushed aside after I finish this one. One of my new housemates is a dr and he said during med school he had a rule to read at least 10 pages of not-med school related stuff everyday. I think he's also 1000 times smarter than me, so we'll see.
Re: Kasa (or anyone else): Suite Francaise
I agree that parts of the first book seemed kind of scattered. The characters, in particular, were all over the place. While part of that was likely due to her inability to edit the book, I think part of it may have been by design -- it illustrated the chaos of the time.
While I liked the first book, I personally enjoyed the second book more. It was more organized and, to me, portrayed a fascinating glimpse into life in an occupied village which I knew little about.
There is some connection between the characters in the first book and the second book, but not a lot. So if you're not feeling the book right now, you'd probably be fine putting it down and picking it back up some other time.
To me, one of the most interesting parts of the book was all of the extra stuff at the end. I would not at all categorize it as "fun" though. It was really pretty heartbreaking. So, I wouldn't blame you if you want to switch to a lighter read.
