Momma's

When did you start whole milk?  Parker's 1st birthday was yesterday (I will tell you all about it when I have more time).  He has his doctor's appointment on Friday and we are going to talk about transitioning then, but I was just trying to get some ideas on when some people started, how you did the transition, and how it went.

Re: Momma's

  • I started switching Maggie 3 weeks before her birthday. Mostly, I did it b/c we were going to Disney and I wanted to have her switched before we went away. We just started doing part milk and part formula for a week at a time (ie first week 1/4 milk 3/4 formula, then gradually increasing it). We didn't have her appt until almost 13 months and at her previous appt her pedi said we didn't have to wait for her well check up to start switching anyway.

  • That sounds like an easy way to do it.  I'm trying to talk Rusty into letting me nurse until he is 18 months, but either in the morning and night or just night.  We will see what he lets me do/what we compromise on.  We didn't talk about it at all at his 9 month appointment so that is why I am waiting.  Since I have a decent freezer stash we might start using that instead of me nursing him right after work.  That way I can wean that session out.  I don't know if I am ready for this...he is just growing up to fast.  Pretty soon he will be able to tell me hates me and that I am ruining his life (because lets face it, most kids say that to their parents at one time or another)!  And I'm not ready for that AT ALL!

  • Yes, they do grow up fast. However, they just get to be so much more fun. Watching them grow is the whole fun of it.

I thought you couldn't wait to stop bf?

  • Physically I am ready, but I am torn up inside.  I'm terrified of stopping and then him getting sick and not being able to comfort him.  Yes, it is somewhat irrational, but I can't get over it.  I was trying to get myself ready by telling myself that I was quitting, but it didn't work...

  • We started Eli on WCM about a week after his birthday. We aren't typical though because he only gets it with meals and maybe drinks a total of 2-3 oz a day and that is on the high side. But I am also letting Eli self wean so he still nurses 5 times during the day and 2 overnight. He likes WCM but much prefers boobfood.

  • We started about a week before his 1st and did a similar mix-in to Krissy. Can I just say that my kid is drinking us out of house and home?? He drinks 20-30 oz of whole organic milk/day, and with milk at $6+/gallon, yeah.....

  • What milk do you buy?  Our grocery store (Dillons) carries an Organic store brand (Kroger) milk that I got for my niece and nephew and they seemed to like it.

That is crazy! Mags drinks about 24 oz a day too, but we don't buy organic so the price is only $2.49-$3 a gallon. You are probably spending more on milk than you did formula :)

HyVee is the only one with a store brand, it's 1/2 gallon sized here and costs more to buy 2 1/2's than a full gallon. We buy Whole Foodd 365 Organic Whole, it's $5.99/gallon, but in Denver it was $5/gallon....seriously?

We are totally paying more for milk than formula, we go through anywhere from 3-6 gallons/week between Anders and I.

I'm going to buy a cow and put it on our little 1/2 acre backyard in the city...

  • That is obsurd!  My sister gets Horizon milk, but I don't know how much it is.  Rusty and I don't drink milk so we would just be getting it for Parker.  I like that the organic stuff lasts longer.
