freezer paper and quilting

So I am reading somethings about freezer paper and quilting.  I word hunted "freezer paper" in the board FAQs to see if I could find this there, but to no avail.  Wondering what you quilters think of this idea...

Could I draw a quilting design onto freezer paper, iron and adhere it to my "quilt sandwich," free motion quilt following my pattern, removing the freezer paper when I am finished?  Would stitching over the paper allow for that, or cause a mess?  

I suppose I could test it out on some scrap fabric this weekend if no one has already tried it.

I've never used freezer paper for this, but I've done it with plain old tracing paper. I just pin the paper onto the quilt top. Sometimes you get little pieces of paper stuck under stitches and you have to go back and pull them out individually, but mostly it tears off cleanly.

Awesome!  Thank you!  I think I am going to give the freezer paper a shot on some scrap fabric as well as the tracing paper on scrap fabric!

Freezer paper peals off easy after you iron it on. You are going to have to peal off each section because after you sew/quite over it, it will preforate? it and it will tear along the sewing line.

That is what I was thinking, but that is ok with me!  Until I can get the motions down of free motion quilting without following a pattern, I thought it would be worth a try.

Rather than using freezer paper - why not use one of those purple markers that evaporates or washes off ...  or chalk and decorate with a pattern to then free motion.  You probably could use one of those stencils from a craft store to get the image...

 Freezer papers is more of a stabilizer and doesn't allow the one layer of fabric to move .. it will not stop you from straying from the line.  Some of the pieces can be really annoying to peel off - and if you don't, it could melt in your dryer ...

 I like that you are continuing to search for a solution!

Thank you for this idea! I've been seriously contemplating how to go about free-motion quilting for the first time and this sounds totally doable.

I do have one of those chalk pencils, and I want to pick up a washable fabric marker/pen.  But, the reason I was thinking about the freezer paper thing is that I found a pretty design on the wonderful world of the interwebz that I could print out on regular paper and the trace onto the freezer paper and iron that to the quilt.  I am not quite ready to just free hand draw something.  I could, but this design is a little more detailed and I am not sure if I could get it the way I wanted it. 

I have seen, and like, the stencils!  I have been thinking of pick a few of those up as well.  Thank you so much!

I am pretty sure you can put freezer paper through your printer, google to make sure.

I think I read that in the post that gave me the idea for the quilting pattern.  I will dive a little more into the research.  Thanks so much!
