Random topic--If you aren't from Phoenix, what do you miss the most?

I love living here 95% of the time, but every once and a while I get a little homesick.  So I thought I'd ask other people in my shoes...  Where did you grow up and what do you miss the most from the place you grew up?

As for me, I grew up in Wisconsin and the thing I miss the most is having random strangers talk to me whenever I went out in public. I miss the Midwestern way-over-the-top friendliness!

  • I miss NH summers, being near the ocean, and being surrounded by trees.
  • I'm from CT.  I miss the weather (yes, the rain), the scenery, the SUPER small town that I grew up in, my family, THE FOOD!!!, being pretty close to the ocean.  I hate AZ.  I've never liked it.  The weather and food suck, and I have no idea what part of the desert landscape people find beautiful - all I see is a whole lotta brown.

I'd move back in a heartbeat if I could convince Casey and my family.  hahaha

  • I also miss the how friendly people are back home. I am from New England (we moved here from MA, but I grew up in Maine and lived in NH forever as well). People here are not nice. Well, let me take that back, strangers are not the first to say hello, ever and when I say hello I just get a head nod and the garage doors go down you know... I hate that. Where I lived before, everyone was friendly... Everyone would talk to each other when checking the mail, getting home, etc. My husband used to get cought outside for an hour talking to the neighbors. It was great.

I also miss my family but that would be the case anywhere haha. And I really miss Chinese food. The chinese food out here is horrible...

    Spedies

    Snow (sometimes)

    Rain/ Thunderstorms

    4 seasons

  • I'm from Ottawa, Canada.

    I miss:

The snow.  There, I said it.  I miss the snow.  Even when it's so deep that you can't see your car and have to shovel yourself out of your house and even when your pants get soaked because your boots aren't tall enough.  Gah, I never thought I would!

    Friendlier people.

Hearing people speak French all the time.

    TIM HORTONS and poutine.

    Watching the leaves change.

Having fun things to do in the summer.

    Pretty old stone buildings.

Actually, everything.  I pretty much hate Arizona.

  • I am from Northern Californa and I really miss all the green trees and being so close to the coast.  Like 10 minutes from the beach was amazing.... I miss the fog and the rain.

  • I'm from NorCal as well, but a little more inland.  I also miss green trees and lots of grass and plants.  I miss being half way between the ocean and the moutains (both less than 2 hours)- the beach in the summer and snowboarding in the winter!  On weekends it was a hard decision between San Francisco or Lake Tahoe for a day trip.  I miss Apple Hill in the fall, minor league baseball games (sitting outside!!!) and wakeboarding at the river or the lake in the summer, even the rain and fog in the winter (sometimes).  And of course, family.

I like it here for the most part, and I definitely don't miss the HCOL, but there is a lot I miss about Cali...

  • oh and I miss the ocean. A 6hour drive to get to an ocean is a bit much for me.... I really miss the ocean. The smell of the ocean and everything about the New England coast :-)

  • I'm from PA & I think I'd have to say I miss the great food the most, esp. really good Chinese!!  These AZ Chinese people suck at cooking!  I also miss the crazy thunder/rain storms...those were fun to sit on the porch & watch.  And good "homemade" soft serve ice cream from lil local ice cream shops.  Most of what I've found here is either chain or frozen yogurt places.

Funny u mentioned Wegman's Christina...I miss that place too!

  • I'm from Manhattan Beach (Los Angeles area)

Living walking distance to the beach...overcast/marine layer days....sweatshirts/uggs...and Rajun Cajun...my favorite restuarant

  • I'm from the Seattle area, and I miss the mountains there... I know we have them here, but they're nothing compared to the Cascades, or Mount Baker, or Mount Ranier.  I miss how green it is, and the close proximity to Puget Sound.  But most of all, I miss my friends & family there.  I've made some amazing friends here, but I still miss my bff & my family.
  • I miss the Fall.

I also miss living in a Blue State. The political climate here is pretty terrible.

  • I'm from Upstate NY so I miss....

Good soft serve ice cream as well, Heather

    Spiedie's

    Wegmans

    Grass and trees EVERYWHERE

    My family

    Good pizza

Knowing my town like the back of my hand

    NO traffic

The ability to drive to multiple states in just a couple hours

Being able to go outside in the summer time

Sweatshirts - I NEVER thought I'd say that but I look forward to wearing warmer clothes. I do NOT miss the snow or freezing cold weather but I miss chilly days where I can wear jeans and a hoodie.

As much as I love living here and the friends that I have made, we don't plan to live here forever....actually, we've talked recently about trying to move within the next 5ish years back to the East Coast. NOT back to Upstate NY but maybe NC!

  • I also grew up in Upstate NY. Spiedie's rock. You can order the marinade online though: http://www.spiedieandribpit.com/ Hooray for the internet!

There are a few good pizza places and chinese restaurants around, but I agree, they are a bit more rare than I'd like. However, I've enjoyed plenty of good Thai and Vietnamese food!

  • We just moved from Minnesota and I miss having family around, especially now that we have a little one.

  • We moved here from Eastern Washington and for the most part I love it.  Here's what I miss, having grown up in the NW:

-Friendly strangers (easier to make friends)

-Independent coffee shops and restaurants (other than mexican/pizza/bar&grills)

-Green living (we don't even have recycling service at our house...boooo...)

-Green plants! (though I don't miss the clouds and constant rain)

-Colorful homes with unique style and large lots (seems like you have to spend a lot to get that here)

    -Family!

Oh yeah, my Mom ships me the sauce because it's cheaper that way and we make them ALL the time!
