When to harvest a mystery squash

I asked you girls last month about two mystery squash plants that randomly started growing where we planted some flowers.  It turns out that one of the plants is an acorn squash plant, but the other is still a mystery.  I think it must be some type of weird hybrid.  The first veggie it produced stopped growing a while ago even though it was pretty small, so we ate it and it was pretty yummy!!   It kind of tasted like a mix between an acorn squash and a pumpkin.

Anyway, so now it has two or three more squashes growing and one of them is getting pretty big and I was wondering if there was a way to know when we should harvest it.

Re: When to harvest a mystery squash

  • I just read your previous post. So it's a winter squash? Do you have a pic of the fruit? What shape and color are the fruit? How long are the vines?

I used to work as a summer squash breeder so I may be able to help you ID it.
