COOL (temp) things to do

My parents r coming in again Sept. 1st & we'd like some cool, inside things to do that don't cost a ton.  I can't really think of much, besides stuff that is outside.  I'd also like to keep it w/in 2 hrs or so.  R there any cool museums or stuff like that to check out?  I already had them in the AZ Science Center.  TIA

Re: COOL (temp) things to do

  • DH & I really like the Phoenix Art Museum.  Your parents would be here on the First Friday - where it's free.  Might be worth checking out

We've been wanting to check out the Museum of Musical Instruments, but haven't gotten there yet.

There's also the aquarium at Arizona Mills.  I haven't been there either, however I know that Jenn is Silly has.

  • The Heard Museum is a good spot to check out.
  • Do you guys like sports?  I'm not sure if the D-backs are in town over that time, but when the roof is closed, it's nice and air conditioned in there.  Plus the D-backs are in first place in the NL West right now (although they have had a pretty terrible road series as of late), but it's getting exciting in baseball right now!  :)
  • Oh, and since you said within 2 hours, a day trip to Sedona would be great!  There are really cool shops at Tlaquepaque (my dad has a time share at Los Abrigados, one of the resorts up there, and Tlaquepaque is next door, so we walk over there all the time when we go up).  It's right by Oak Creek.

There are also some cool shops in the main part of Sedona.  The Pink Jeep tours are really fun.  And of course there are lots of gorgeous hiking trails all over Sedona.

  • I'm partial to the museums :)  I love the Phoenix Art Museum.  But then again, I used to work there AND got married there ;)

The Science Center might have something cool going on.

I also agree with day trips to Sedona or Flag to cool off.

Even though it involves a bit of outdoorsy time, you could go to Old Town Scottsdale and walk through the shops there and have lunch.  There are some great little restaurants over there.

Pool time.  You guys have a pool so take advantage of it.  Every second!

ETA - I just realized you said you took them to the SC already.  So then there's PAM, Heard and I've heard (hehe) awesome things about MIM.

  • Thanks ladies!  I'm def. gonna look into the Art Museum & see if they wanna check out the Heard.  I was to Heard before, but not them.  We did Scottsdale the last time they were here & they liked that.

Yes Jaye, we'll def. be in the pool quite a bit!  :)

    Skittles- we were bummed...the D-backs aren't in town while they're here!  :(

  • A museum that gets overlooked a lot but is actually pretty cool:  Hall of Flame

It's a firefighter museum, and we went there because DH's dad is a firefighter and was visiting us.  I was really surprised by how fun it was.  They have a huge room that's a memorial to heroes (especially local heroes) that have risked their lives or died saving people.  It has a picture of the person and a story about what they did.  You can also listen in on live dispatch calls to fire and emergency.  Kind of neat.  Tons of antique fire trucks and historical artifacts.
