Salary negotiations

I am meeting with our higher up boss today to discuss the aspects of my new job. I am moving up in the company from a marketing consultant to marketing manager/general manager of one of our locations. Boss, said she had a copy of what my previous marketing manager?s agreement was, and we would look it over and go over any client switches I would like to make this afternoon. My previous manager had 2 years marketing experience when she became manager, and no television experience. I have 5 years marketing experience, and 13 years in television. I have tripled my sales totals in the past 5 years, and have actually picked up the slack from my previous boss, and when we have issues on the weekends and someone need to get things done, Our main station calls me over the boss. My new boss who is going to be going over the money part with me has only been here for 6 months, and knows some of it, but not all of what I do for the station. The negotiation part will be either my salary, or my commission percent. What would you start with? I am thinking I know what I want for my base salary, but don?t want to look too greedy, but at the same time, I do have more experience than the previous marketing manager. How have your salary negotiations gone in this economy? Our economy in North Dakota is booming right now with the oil field, and my branch is right in the heart of oil country, so I know that my station will make money, but being in marketing, everything is a negotiation, would you go for a higher salary, higher commission rate, or both? I already have 5 weeks? vacation a year, 2 weeks sick time, which will now stay the same until I have been here 10 years. But we can roll over our sick and vacation time, so I have acquired quite a bit. TIA

  • I would go in confident and start the conversation with, "Given my 5 years experience in marketing, 13 years of experience in television and the responsibilities I've taken on within the company, I believe my base salary should be increased to XXX with a commission of XXX." And go from there. If you're not confident, you would sell it. Know what you're worth!
