I think some of you (GRSP, perhaps?) are fans of Dennis Archer. He spoke to our class today! He had a lot of great, if a bit intimidating, things to tell us.
Re: Dennis Archer fans?
LOVE him! good memory, Diana!
He spoke to my NHS and was incredible. Neat to have him in your class today.
He advised all of the men in the class that to underestimate their female colleagues will be to lose. I liked that.
He has such an interesting resume--very diverse work experiences.
Wasn't his name floated as a potential candidate for governor? After this one experience with him, I wish he had run or maybe that he will run in the future. I think this state needs its first non-white governor and based on some of what he said to us, I think he would find it particularly meaningful to be that person.
Oh, neat speaker! If I remember correctly, I think he considered running for governor in the last election. I don't think he ever declared though.
Interesting comment about women in the law profession. In my (albeit very limited) experience, I think law firms have been one of the more difficult places in which to break the glass season. A lot of old boys clubs where deals were made on the golf course or at the lounge with martinis in hand.
That's obviously changed a lot, but there is still some of the old guard. So many great, talented women coming out of law school now though.
Anyway, my point is that it's great that he mentioned that.
I agree with you Kasa, that the upper echelons of legal practice definitely have a glass ceiling to be broken down more thoroughly.
We had two other fantastic speakers yesterday, one of whom was the US Atty for eastern MI (also a Wayne*Law alum!) and she talked about how certain areas of law (criminal defense, for example) are still very heavily male-dominated.
The director of our LWR program spoke briefly about how she was one of the first women to become a partner at her firm. Definitely makes me feel grateful for those who have come before and charged with continuing to blaze a trail for those who will come after.
A member of the character/fitness committee also talked, and that was scary.
