It went horribly.
At first they sent in an intern that barely speaks English whose idea of a 'medical history' started long before Wyatt was born... he wanted to know every last detail of my pregnancy and then I had to explain a whole bunch of stuff such as 'shoulder dystocia' and 'cord knot' to him because he didn't know the English terms for them... it was kind of funny... I said 'he had a knot in the cord' and he said 'so the cord around the neck' I said 'no, like an over hand knot' , and he said 'you mean a cord wrapped around his hand?' so I took the cord of the blood pressure reader and tied it in a knot and said 'KNOT!'
later on my doctor came in and asked a few questions and ended up saying that unless he is still losing weight, he's not concerned. So he sent me to weigh and measure Wyatt. He is 25.5 inches long (no longer than 2 months ago) and 16lbs 6 oz (6 oz less than 2 weeks ago).
When I went back in he told me to take Wyatt for blood work to check for diabetes (my Dad had type I) among a bunch of other potential problems. He said that he doesn't expect for anything to come up wrong, but it will be good to know just in case. I asked him if hypothetically Wyatt were diagnosed with any of the conditions if they would expect him to be lethargic and he said 'absolutely. and he would be sick and cranky, which he obviously isn't.'
So I'm happy because our doctor is optimistic, but I'm upset because he is still losing weight and he has to be poked tomorrow
He wrote me a prescription for numbing gel to help out. I'm just counting the hours until it is over
Edited to fix wording
Re: Wyatt's appointment... update
I'm sorry it didn't go well
T&P's that his test results come back good, too. I have a good friend whose little boy has type I diabetes and I know how challenging that can be. But I also remember when her son was diagnosed and he was not nearly as happy and playful as Wyatt is.
Is he a good eater? I know this is not ideal, but have you thought about supplementing with formula or maybe whole milk. Of course check with your doctor first, but I have heard that whole milk is okay for babies under a year in small doses and so long as it doesn't replace formula or breastmilk.
I actually asked my doctor about weaning and feeding him formula instead and for now he told me no because my supply is still good and he has a healthy appetite. He just wants me to try to squeeze in an extra meal into his day to see if that helps, or to make him nurse longer (because he has fly-by feedings).
His hunch is that after he gets a little older and has been walking for a while, he will start gaining weight properly
That stinks that he has to get tests done, but it is a good sign that your doctor is optimistic. Keep us posted!
Wyatt is 35 inches? That is very long. Mags was 31 at her 1 year and she is tall.
LOL I was gonna say... from pictures you and Lance don't look very tall, so where did Wyatt get the height from haha .
Sorry to hear it! Fingers crossed things come back well and the blooddraw is not to bad for you both.
Re: the intern... I finally told my Pedi that I do not want medical students to do a "pre-appointment" bit with us. We were having a med student come in every appointment and ask us all about how A was doing and what his medical history is and then try and dx him with some major issues (we were told he had chronic asthma by oe when he had croup, and a spinal fluid leak by another when he had an ear infection....) and not relay anything to the dr. Honestly, compete waste of my time when I'm there with a sick kid. I'm all about learning, but there is a way to educate students without making your patients ticked off. Maybe you can put "no interns" on your chart? I have done "no students" with my midwives...after one said "I think the baby is dead" because she couldn't get a HB I decided enough was enough.
OMG My jaw just dropped. Why would anyone ever say that!? Awful!
Thank you girls
Meghan: That is HORRIBLE!! If I have another experience like last time I might just ask the nurses about not getting another intern... that being said there was one at my delivery and he was just as awesome as our actual doctor, so I guess it just depends on the person.
We got his blood taken today and it was just as bad as I expected, but he lived. They had to poke him twice in the arm (they gave us emila cream before so he didn't feel it like he would have). He didn't cry when his blood was being taken, just when they were trying to find a vein and I had to hold him down. He screamed so loud that a couple extra nurses came in to make sure everything was okay, and when we were done and went out into the lobby, he got applause from everyone in there saying he did so well... it was really funny.
Then we had to get him to pee into a bag with a hole in it...the nurse called it a baby condom lol. we pretty much had to stuff his whole baby business inside through a tiny hole. It took us two tries but finally we sealed the bag off enough to actually catch it rather than get urine all over the floor.
Good times : Keep your fingers crossed for us that we don't hear anything back! No news is good news!
