Irene

I watched the local news last night and this morning and am now sufficiently freaked out.  Ugh.  Looks like we will get a pretty direct hit on Saturday night/Sunday morning.  They are saying the jetstream is similar to Hurricane Bob.  I remember that one - not good!

What are you doing to prepare?  I am going to put all of my patio furniture, potted plants, grill, etc in the garage.  I am worried about our super tall trees but there's nothing I can do about that.  I really hope the power doesn't go out, because we have SO much food in our freezer and I don't think putting it in a cooler would keep it.

Re: Irene

  • Ughhh I haven't been paying attention to this at all.
  • What I heard this morning from Pete Bouchard (Ch7) on Matty in the Morning was that the latest path would have her hit NY and be a tropical storm by the time she reached us. Of course the path is ever changing.

I have my friend's bachelorette party Saturday so I'm hoping most of the rain holds off until overnight Saturday and hopefully the drive home Sunday morning won't be too bad. I plan to get groceries Saturday morning so I don't have to go out once I get home Sunday. But overall I'm not too worried.

I vaguely remember Bob and it wasn't too bad where I was (~1/2 north west of Boston)...few down limbs but we didn't lose power.

  • My BFF is named Irene, so I think of her every time I hear about it.

We aren't doing much since we're still in an apt. DH wants to get more bottled water and a few more canned goods. i told him to go for it. DD is all set for the time being if we have any issues.

If power goes out extensively, I remember friends just had a big cookout and had everyone over to eat their food that was going to spoil. Could be an option for you.

That's weird because I was watching channel 7 this morning and they were all like IT'S COMING STRAIGHT FOR US!  HEAVY WINDS!  LOTS OF RAIN!  It was like the only news story of the day.  I find Matt Noyes from NECN to be the best at presenting just the facts, so I am going to try to catch his forecast after work today.

  • The media blows everything way out of proportion...just like they do for most snow storms, especially with the first of the year.

Haha, or like the earthquake earlier this week?  The news that night was 30 minutes of asking people on the street, "So, did you feel anything?!"

  • I have a program starting Sunday afternoon, so we have 30 people traveling to Boston this weekend. A majority of them are international, so I'm hoping they'll be coming in on Saturday or early Sunday and be fine. I suspect I'll be on the phone all morning on Sunday, though.  We're working on our contingency plans at the moment.  If they don't shut us down (we're the only thing going on at the school), then we've got a bus to take everyone over to the school from the housing, and we're hoping the catering staff can get in all right. Otherwise, it's IHOP for everyone. And if we do get shut down, our housing manager has ordered fruit/snacks for people at the apartments, and our housing coordinator lives on-site and can meet people. I just hope I can get here if I need to.  This is when not having a car makes life truly difficult. Sigh.

My husband is sufficiently freaked out, though, so we're making a grocery run tonight and stocking up on food/water.  After desperately trying to track down water during the water main break last year, he's not interested in taking chances.

  • We went from possible mandatory evacuations to likely having nothing at all so I really hope she moves east and off the coast for all of you too!
  • We'll make sure we are stocked- especially being so pregnant. I thought it was supposed to hit Sunday night/ Monday morning and have been worried about driving in to work.

We were in Maine for Hurricane Bob and lost power for almost 2 weeks. I can't believe how long ago that was!

Oh good, I was more worried for the Carolinas than I was for us, based on the projections I saw on the news recently.

Maybe I should be more concerned but I'm not.  I'll be bringing my plants inside tonight and maybe we should think about putting the grill in the garage or something, but otherwise we're not doing any prep. We do have some bottled water in the garage already, so there's that.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

OMG, 2 weeks.  I can't imagine.  We were on the coast so maybe that's why I am remembering the damage being so bad.  The police were coming around encouraging people to evacuate to the local shelter.

I think you're right and it's actually Sunday night/Monday morning.  On the news this morning they said 2am Sunday but maybe that was just when the rain would start.  I hope so because we are supposed to go to a wedding Saturday night.

  • WBUR said this morning that there would be a definitive answer as to the track by late today or first thing tomorrow morning. Last I heard we were getting the brunt of it around 10pm Sunday, but rain, wind, etc would start well before that.

I'm on the weather updates for work up there and so far we show possible closing Monday due to the path hitting overnight Sunday/early Monday.

Hurricanes always change at the last minute, it seems!

  • No one probably remembers this, but last year Hurricane Earl was coming up the east coast and the news was all riled up about how strong the storm would be, etc etc. We just happened to be flying to Hawaii around the time when the storm would be passing through so I was glued to the news trying to figure out what we would do if our flight was cancelled etc. In fact, Southwest cancelled all their flights for that morning. And it turned out to be nothing. Some rain, but no damaging winds up here.

But like Punky said, hurricanes can change last minute. Unfortunately the meteorologists really don't know what will happen, but they always seem to fear the worst.

    "I didn't feel anything, but I said I did."

"It was over so fast, I didn't even notice it."

    Annnnnnd that's what she said.

    Oh, the possibilities are endless.

  • LOL!

    "My desk was shaking."

"I felt a little dizzy afterward."

    "This was my first experience!"

  • I almost lasted 30 years in FL with no hurricanes hitting Orlando until 2004 when we got hit with 3....so I feel like an old pro now.  I did go to the grocery store today, just to make sure we have food and snacks for being stuck inside for a day or so.  Did grab 2 big bottles of water also, and we'll fill up the gas in the car.

I'll wait until it gets closer to see what else needs to be done.  In FL, we had to put cushions and mattresses in front of the windows and slept on the living room floor.  Me and DH had only been dating a year, it was scary, but also kinda romantic Wink
