I just noticed you had the cloth diapering badge in your siggy! I hope you don't mind if I ask you a couple questions. What kind of detergent do you use? I had been using Rockin Green, but I think James is having a reaction to it. His poor bum is red after just one hour in a cloth diaper. And if I don't switch him to a disposable it turns in to raised red rash.
Also what kind/style to you use? We are just about growing out of all our "newborn stash".
Re: Amachuta!
YAY for another cloth diaperer! I love love love cloth diapers. Sorry to hear about James' red bum. No fun. When Noah was really young and just had "breastmilk poop" I actually did not use any detergent at all. It is so water soluble and pretty "clean" (weird description of poop, I know) that I just washed them in hot with an extra hot rinse cycle. Now, I am not sure if others would recommend that, as I do not know about bacteria, etc. But Noah's skin was SOOOOO sensitive that I personally did it that way. Now that he is on solids I use the Bum Genius Detergent and have liked it and it does well with N's eczema/sensitive. (I also make my own wipes since his skin is so sensitive)
I primarily use "Smartipants" Brand All in One Pocket Diapers (cost effective and easy to use). The only downfall is they are not sold in stores, only online. I also have a few Bum Genius and Fuzzibuns All in One Pocket Diapers. I love the AIO style since they grow with N and I do not have to store all of the past sizes of diapers. I do have two All in One Shells with inserts that snap in and I do not like them as well. It all comes down to the poop....it rolls off the pocket diapers easier. EEW! haha I have 21 diapers total and wash every 3 days or so. So I only had to buy 21 diapers ONCE...loved that. www.diaperjunction.com is a good resource and you can do trials with different kinds of diapers there if that interests you at all. Please ask as many questions as you would like to! I did of my CDing friends!
::sneaking into a post about cloth diapering, where I probably don't belong::
Mira, before you moved, did you ever try the Coconut Rain laundry soap? It's sold at the Co-op and elsewhere in town. I use it and love it. It's all natural.
I know they have a soap specifically for cloth diapers. And I think one of the big hospitals in town (Metro?) was using it in their nursery.
Anyway, if you're interested, they'll probably ship it to you.
::tip-toeing back out::
It comes in a variety of scents. I've use the lavender and something citrusy, which both smelled good. They also offer an original, unscented version. I don't think any of them actually smell like coconut though, if that's what you were wondering.
Bummer...I was hoping to be able to have my clothes smell like I was in a tropical island.
Mira - I cloth diaper part-time with Henry and I just use regular detergent. He has fairly sensitive skin, which he gets from me, poor kid. I use very little, but we haven't had a problem yet.
How much detergent would you say you use? Do you use the same detergent for his clothes?
LOL at Kasa! I just googled that detergent. If I still lived in GR
I would try it out. But I don't think it makes sense financially after shipping. (And now I have "chocolate rain" stuck in my head.)
Amachuta- Thanks! No soap huh? I don't know if I could do that. Even though I don't exactly know what the detergent does. Yeah James has super sensitive skin. Do you make your own wipe solution? Right now I am using just wash cloths and water. But once we get this rash under control I want to try using a wipe solution to get his bum clean
Yay! Another cloth diaperer!
I used a different detergent for his clothes (Seventh Generation Free and clear for clothes and Rockin Green for his diapers). I am scared to use the 7th Gen on his diapers as it has enzymes in it and I read you shouldn't use detergents with enzymes on diapers as it can irritate the skin.
I think I was using too much of the cloth detergent. But I had too, or else when I opened up the washer door is smelled like a barn yard. I was using 3 Tb (the bag said 2-3 TB for HE washers though). And then I would run the dipes through a quick wash with no detergent to make sure all the detergent was rinsed out.
This is my washing routine. (I have no idea if this is overkill - which i am sure it is. I would rather have one step too many than have either skin issues or "barn yard' diapers!)
Hot rinse
Hot medium wash cycle with cold rinse
Cold rinse
Cold rinse
Low Heat dry.
Make sure that you have enough water in the wash and rinse cycles to really get the diapers clean.
Hanging the diapers out in the sun is a good way to get any smell out as well. The sun also helps get stains out! Not to mention saves on the energy bill. Also, if you use any diaper cream, that can make your diapers smelly as well. I learned the hard way and used Desitin with a disposable liner to protect the diaper. Well, trace amounts of it got on the diaper and made it smell like fish when it came out of the wash. Culprit? Desitin has Cod Liver Oil in it's ingredients. YUCK! I have since stop using it. (Plus, diaper creams can effect absorbency as well)
I make my own wipe formula with the following:
2 cups of hot water, 2 T. of Olive Oil (gentler than baby oil since it has no added fragrance, you can also use Tea Tree Oil), 1 T. of baby wash (many recipes call for 2, but since it has added fragrance I use 1 and it works out well for me).
