Preparing for Irene (tips from Serve RI)
ARE YOU PREPARED FOR HURRICANE IRENE? Weather forecasters are predicting that hurricane IRENE's path will cross Rhode Island this weekend into Monday. Although the exact track and impact are still uncertain, it looks like this will be a significant event and now is the time to prepare. A hurricane can totally disrupt normal life. If roads are impassible and businesses are heavily damaged, you'll need to have the supplies on hand to live for up to 7 days, and maybe longer. Supplies: Do you have all of the supplies you need to live for up to 7 days should this prove to be a serious storm? Here are the essential things you should gather in preparation:Drinking Water - at least 1 gallon per person per day;Washing water - clean & fill bath tubNonperishable food - at least enough to last 3-7 daysCooking tools, can opener, utensils, Sterno or propane camp stove or charcoal grill (outside use only)Blankets/pillowsClothingFirst Aid Kit, medicines, prescription drugsSpecial items for children and the elderlyHygiene itemsFlashlights and batteriesPaper plates, cuts, plastic wareMatches & candle lanterns (open flames are a fire hazard)Battery powered radioFully charged cell phone with an extra batteryCashKeysImportant documentsHand tools & Clean-up tools (push broom, trash bags, etc.)Vehicle fuel tanks filledPet care items Yard Preparation: Remove all loose items which will become dangerous projectiles in high wind. Enclose/secure all yard furniture, toys, equipment, planters, hoses. In case of evacuation, know where to go, who to call and what to do in the event that Irene hits. And, don't forget your PETS. You'll need to plan for their safety and comfort as well. After you have prepared your household, check on your neighbors, especially elderly and disabled or living alone. During the Storm: Stay inside, away from windows and stay informed about the weather. A battery-powered radio is important to have. If there is Internet service you can go to NOAA's weather service for up to date information. Remember: Get a kit, make a plan, be informed.
