Shrub Roses

Hello all!

Wondering if anyone had advice on pruning/winterizing Shrub Roses? I just bought a new home, with a full flower garden. Most things are pretty self sufficient and wont need much work, but I REALLY want to make sure the Shrub Roses I have stay hearty all the way through to the winter (Minnesota).

My father has explained some things to me on how to properly care for them, but sometimes, he's a bit hit or miss. I've been pruning down to the 5th leaf growth, and taking off a bunch of dead branches near the base..but I think I'm just doing too much.  They look kind of sparse, and I really dont want to kill them!  There were a lot of dead branches, as our house had been vacant for about a year before we finally got in there, so I want to get things back to normal....

Any help/advice on how/when to do this, it would be great!

My best advice is to google it. There is such a huge amount of info about roses available online.
