Update: WWYD?-Long

So I asked you ladies for your advice about a friend that works for DH's business.   This is the update.  DH and I went through the friend's contract and noticed that it is up September 12th of this year.  We felt it would be best just to tell her that we would not be renewing her contract and help her find something else.  Yesterday she is supposed to be at work at 9 am.  She did not call, e-mail or text saying she was going to be late.  Well she decided to come in around 11:15 and ask for her check.  DH gave it to her and had to go do turn in (something that is her responsibility, but since she decided to walk in so late DH had to do it).  By the time he got back she had left.  She told one of the other workers to tell us that she left her keys.  DH notices she did not give back the office key so I tell him he should call her because it may have been a mistake.  In the meantime we have no idea if she actually quit or what.

We finally get an e-mail from her asking if she can pick up her check early next week so she can come in the evening and get her stuff out of the office.  When she is done she will leave the office key.  She asks if she can be at the office by herself to get her stuff, but I told DH that since she left the key to the building one of us would have to be there.  From this we deduct she has officially quit.

I am not completely sure how I feel right now about this whole situation.  I think she could have handled it better (i.e. talked to us instead of just not showing up for your shift and quitting on the spot without actually telling us) and not blocked me on Facebook.  Part of me however is just glad that she is not working for us anymore.  I think it makes life a little simpler.  I will give it a week or two before I call or text her to see how much this whole thing may have effected our friendship and go from there.

Thanks for the advice ladies and for listening :o)  I appreciate it!

Re: Update: WWYD?-Long

  • I know she's your friend and all, but I would change the locks on the office asap if she doesn't turn them in.  And I would insist that you need her official resignation in writing.

I'm sorry it got so messy, but don't let the fact that she is/was a friend mean you're not covering your asses with your business.  Good luck.

  • I'm sure you already know this, but she should definitely NOT be allowed to get her stuff alone.  Not that someone needs to hover over her, but I think someone should be in the general vicinity because this doesn't seem to be an amicable parting.  Like you said, if she doesn't have a building key someone will have to be there anyways.  Not a fun situation for you in any way.

  • That was a tough situation, and it's stupid that your friends handled it so poorly.

Like the PP's said, don't let her be there alone, especially since she left on bad terms. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

  • Do you think it's a bit strange that she asked specifically to be alone when she comes to get her things?  Or am I just being paranoid?  Maybe she's just trying to avoid seeing you guys at all.

  • I'm gonna go with what Eeva said and say that's strange she wants to get her stuff alone...any place you quite/ get fired from accompany you when getting your things, I would for sure be there and just be on the safe side get the door locks changed it's only a few dollars to get spare keys made and from the sounds of it she acting shady.... Good luck.

  • I think it's weird too that she wanted to be there alone.  I hope this all works out for the best!  It should at least be a huge relief that you won't have to deal with her working there anymore.
  • All the other ladies said it well...

don't let her get her stuff alone.

    change the locks if feasible.

get her resignation in writing before giving her the last check so she can't claim that she didn't know she wasn't still your employee, or come after you for something.

    Sorry you're going through this - that's sucky :(

  • I read your last post a few days ago but couldn't respond since I was on my phone.

My thought is exactly what everyone else said.  It's a little strange she is requesting to be alone to get her things.  That would raise a major red flag for me.  I definitely would do exactly what everyone else suggested.

Sorry about such a crappy situation.  I hope it doesn't get too messy.
