Hey signers (angelabff?) a ?
Does anyone know how to sign "viking"? I've checked the interwebs and all of my resources and I'm coming up with nothing.

Re: Hey signers (angelabff?) a ?
No standardized sign for Viking. It's a proper noun so it's fingerspelled.
Of course, now I have to ask, why in the world are you signing Viking? Do share!
my sister asked. she's studying norse myths.
we suspected fingerspeling, but were hoping for something cooler ;-)
I would have asked my sis, but she answered before I could ask her. LOL.
Robin - I'm pretty sure you did a bit of a classifier for it once - I saw you. I think it was Scandinavia + the horns on their hats.
Ok, I just asked my Deaf DH. He said officially it is fingerspelled. However, you could play around with classifiers to describe "Vikings". He said you could sign something like this:
SWEDEN, WOMAN FAT, CL: "horns-on-head".
He also said it might be fun to use two "i" handshapes on either side of head to show the horns.
Mind you, if you just walked up to a Deaf person and started signing all this, they would be like, "WHAT?" But at least it gives you something to play around with.
Thanks!
And yes- it is all about context, isn't it?
I just watched (am almost finished with) a documentary called See What I'm Saying about Deaf and Hard of Hearing performers. It's very good. I totally cried like a baby. The one chick who calls herself TL has what my sister has...and what Baz may have.
So ultimately - I'm learning to sign for him (and for my sister, whose hearing may entirely go one day) and because I can't even express how much I LOVE it. I am of the opinion that everyone on the planet needs to learn how to sign.
I knew I liked you for a reason.
I didn't realize your sis had a hearing-loss (or would she prefer to be called Deaf?)
I loved See What I'm Saying. I was super lucky enough to see C.J. Jones live. If you're interested in seeing some live performances, we should try to hook up. Good luck!
She isn't deaf. She is distinctly hard of hearing, but it could be progressive. She has to wear hearing aids, otherwise she only hears parts of words and sometimes not even that if there is ambient noise that the rest of us can tune out.
I would LOVE to go to a show!
