Teachers come in

Did you see the new Campaign Ad on Education by Obama?

Re: Teachers come in

  • I see it on tv during the day while I'm home. I will try to find it though!
  • I'd be interested to see that, too.
  • I personally love that he says that the government can't do it alone and that parents need to turn off the tv and read to their children. So true. Oh and recruiting and paying more teachers is a HUGE plus.

He is so getting the teacher vote!

  • Yes II saw it and it was very effective.

When he said that at the debate I told my husband if I would have been on the fence (which I wasnt) but that would have won me over. I talk about that ALL the time, how parents want us to do everything

  • Ok, so I am not trying to start anything but this has been bugging me. ?I am all for recruiting more teachers and paying them more....but if we are in such a HUGE deficit, how is he going to do that??

Yes! I totally agree. My husband asked me if that was the clencher for me. This lady on the news the other day even blamed the teacher for her child catching MRSA because the teacher was supposed to prevent bacteria from infecting students. Seriously? lol .... aren't YOU the parent supposed to teach your child to wash their hands...I can tell them to wash their hands like you do but they don't always listen!  They are kids, they are going to catch things but of course it's the teachers fault.

The media is the worst too... always blaming schools and teachers and taking the best quote from the most uneducated of people to play on the news. There was a guy who "exposed himself" to kids one day on their way to school and the parent didn't say ohhh maybe I should walk them to school, they said "I want to know what the school board is going to do to protect my child walking to school." Ummm...if they are in Elementary school you need to find someone to walk them or do it yourself. Take some responsibility people!!!!

    Ok, vent done...for now.

I don't have the answer to this but there def. needs to be a change in priorities and education needs help. Did you know that the class size ammendment law (18 kids per class in lower elem.) that was passed a few years ago has now been altered to 18+4..... really? Why don't we just call it the 22 law now?

Did you also know that teachers get very little per year to purchase classroom supplies and we are now being asked to purchase items such as crayons, pencils, glue (items that our parents purchased for us) for each student with that money. So the money I use to buy construction paper, writing paper, staples, various classroom supplies etc. is supposed to be used for all of the students plus classroom and teacher supplies? That's a long way to stretch $150!

If we are not paid more..fine, but at least not make us pay for our classroom out of our pay...there is no other job where you are required to do this. Oh how I miss the supply closet when I worked in an office....

  • Oh and that money also has to be used to buy copy paper which costs about $30 a box and you usually need a couple boxes throughout the year to provide your students the adequate learning materials that are needed.
  • ITA! I think major changes are needed in education, with out a doubt. However, I think that regardless of whoever comes into office next, we will not see those changes for a while. Which is a shame. I will NEVER understand why the individuals that shape and educate the future doctors, lawyers, etc., don't get compensated as the fundamentalists that they are!

I don't follow politics as much as I should and I have really been trying to educate myself with this election. With that being said from what I'm aware of is that most politicians that do promise to restructure the educational system in our country and compensate teachers as they very much deserve really don't deliver...again that is a shame.

Whether its Obama or McCain in office I feel that they should be voted on based on their big pictures and not solely on education because for some retarded reason education always gets pushed aside. If Obama does do what he promises that would be great! Our country's education system and its teachers need to finally make the agenda of "things to correct." JMO.

Again, I never said I didn't agree. ?What I was asking was how was he going to implement this plan. ?I mean, if it was as easy as he is claiming it is, don't you think something would have been done before now? ?I mean, do you think Republicans just don't give a crap about our schools or children or teachers.

His "plan" is to spend billions more dollars. ?I just don't see where that is going to come from so I was trying to see what you all see.?

I do totally agree, whoever is in office needs to make a change! I was undecided throughout this election and have to make a decision. I do like that he is at least standing up and saying what he believes on this instead of attacking the other side. I am independent on politics. : )

  • I would like to see Congress pass some stuff to make the difference. I don't think it matters if you are Republican or Democrat to be honest. I don't really care WHO makes the difference as long as someone does it. : )

  • I agree....but I don't understand how anyone thinks he /can/ do this. ?I mean, education is a big part of both of their campaigns so what makes what he "says" any better than what McCain "says". ?Neither one of them are going to be able to do what is proposed so I just want to know what makes Obama better.
  • I agree with you, Candi. That's always my biggest thing for any candidate. I think it's great to have all these ideas and philosophies, but ultimately how on earth are they going to do these things? Making changes and giving teachers the pay raise and respect they deserve doesn't come cheap, and that doesn't even scratch the surface of other things that need to get fixed that also cost money!

It's like candidates on both sides say, well I'm going to do X, Y, and Z, and I won't raise taxes. Um, unless you are going to start taking money away from other programs, you can't do that!

For the record, I still don't know who I'll be voting for.

  • Its a cycle, we take away money from education (like admendment 1 did here) and the level of education goes down, the economy suffers from it in years to come from students who are uneducated.

I think in Fl the FCAT has screwed us over. I teach 6th graders who know nothing about science b/c they have focused on the FCAT tests for the last 3 years.... lets see did you know 1) water is alive 2)Water reproduces 3)water grows?

seriously. did you know you start to measure at the 1 mark on th eruler??

Agree on Amendment 1..... that is really bad. My first graders know how to measure with a ruler...sixth graders don't????

ya my 1st graders did too. 6th grade nope

  • The FCATs were around long before Amendment 1 passed. ?What does that have to do with the quality of education now? ?I don't agree with the FCATs or standardized testing in general but Amendment 1 didn't bring that. ?Teachers have been teaching only the FCAT information for LONG before that passed.

That still doesn't answer my question as to how anyone is going to make all of this money appear to give teachers a raise.?
