No more swaddling?

The last 3 nights, B has been breaking out of his swaddle to roll up onto his side. He also moves his legs over to the side of the crib. He's been trying to roll to his tummy (already rolls to his back) for the last week or so during the day.

Last night, he was up every 90 minutes crying (which was lovely since I'm sick and DH was working). I tried shhh-ing and rubbing his tummy. I tried rubbing between his nose (it always knocks him out). I tried turning the white noise on and just letting him cry (only for a couple minutes since he's only 9 weeks). As soon as I'd pick him up and reswaddle, he'd go right back to sleep. And then repeat...

So I don't know if I should stop swaddling since he's trying to roll and gets mad when he can't? We have one sleep sack, but he doesn't like his feet to be contained, so I don't know if he would like that. But, then I could leave his arms open...

How did you get your LO to stay asleep when they didn't want swaddled anymore? Or how do you keep your LO swaddled when they still want/need it but are strong enough to break out?

Re: No more swaddling?

  • I saw your pic the other day and thought of dd1.   We didn't swaddle her with blankets for the same reason.  I had to buy those premade swaddlers with elastic on them where you could wrap her tight.   She managed to always get her arms out.

We would wrap the elastic around really tight.

Sometimes swaddling doesn't work on some kids and there is nothing you can do to figure out if they are waking up b/c they are a. hungry or b. startled themselves awake or c. lonely or d. have gas or e. need a diaper change or f. not feeling good.

  • I'm tempted to just leave him unswaddled tonight and see what happens. At least I have the weekend, and I can nap tomorrow when he does (if he does)... or swaddle him in the middle of the night if I get desperate. With him trying to roll, it scares me to have the blanket - what if he moves it just right and gets it on his face (although, we do have the angelcare monitor now...).

That, or maybe duct tape the swaddle? ;-)

  • We DD started doing that we moved to the miracle blanket. Problem solved.

We used the miracle blanket from the start with DS, and he slept swaddled until around 6 months. Thankfully, we didn't have any sleep issues when we stopped swaddling.

I found my 2nd miracle blanket at Big Wheels for $2.50.

Are they blankets or sacks like you get in the hospital? If they are the sacks, I might take you up on it if the one we have works tonight... :-)

  • They are more sacks than blankets. Essentially stretchy cotton with velcro. C can't bust his arms out of these & he sleeps REALLY well :)

  • I haven't read all the posts but once Sawyer started rolling, we only swaddled his body so he felt the containment but his arms were free.  Eventually we stopped.  We had the swaddle wraps with the velcro and love them.  If you do not have one and would like to try one of ours, I'm more than willing to lend you one.
  • We have one - haven't tried it yet. I'm trying the Aden & Adais blanket tonight - it's stretchier than the light flannel ones my mom made us, so maybe he won't be able to get out. If that doesn't work, and the SwaddleMe does, I might take you up on it!

The sleep sack lasted all of 30 minutes.... he couldn't get comfortable and he only took naps totally 3 hrs today, so I know he's tired!

  • We used those swaddle me's for a while too and they worked well at first...when he started getting bigger I bought him a woombie and I wish I would have just started with that from the beginning. He wasn't nearly has confined in it and was still able to move his arms, but not to where he didn't feel secure. We actually swaddled for a while...I think he was almost 5 months old when we took him out of it and at that point he went right to tummy sleeping cause that was the only way he would sleep.

I noticed the other day that summer infant came out with something just like it for a lot cheaper...I think they have it at BRU.

  • Give it a whirl without tonight. We rarely swaddled our kiddos. We found that their natural movement must have been more comfortable for both of them. With Amelie, if she got over stimulated and couldn't sleep I'd put her in the woombie and it would help. I got it on one of those 1/2 sites. (babyhalfoff.com, babysteals.com, whatever...) I liked it a lot. It was easy and I didn't worry about it coming undone and smothering her. You can unzip it from top or the bottom so you can customize it however he needs.

But I'd really say to take everything out of his bed and just let him do his thing tonight and see how it goes. Amelie was a side sleeper from VERY early on and as soon as she could roll over she was very happy. She's a belly sleeper now but I still put her down on her back. My doctor told us that she can sleep any way she wants as long as she gets herself there. I'm to put her on her back. She's actually a much better sleeper now that she can get on her belly. It must just be a lot more comfortable for her.

Good luck and I hope you find that he sleeps wonderfully without anything. :-)

  • We swear by the Miracle Blanket.  At 9 weeks, they are getting stronger to break out, but I don't think that means they are ready to not be swaddled.  We didn't stop until 4 or 5 months.  Also, I wouldn't do any sort of cry it out at 9 weeks, it is just stressful for both of you and won't produce any useful results.  It just sounds like you need a stronger swaddle, hence the Miracle Blanket.  Seriously, it is that awesome.

  • Blythe liked to be swaddled only with her arms free - so from the armpits/waist down.  Our former pedi was, like, horrified when we told her that, but it was still a tight swaddle and she rarely broke it and obviously survived the horrible parenting mistake of an incomplete swaddle.

I hope something works for you guys and that she chunks of sleep time increase!

  • We found that the Aidan and Anais blankets worked really well for swaddling.  Since they are so much stretchier than other blankets, we could really get a super tight swaddle that they couldn't break out of.  Both of my girls figured out how to get out of a regular swaddle really early on, but those blankets worked perfectly.  I knew they still needed to be swaddled because they wouldn't sleep without it.

  • The sleep sack was a no go. I put him in it, swaddled just his middle, and he woke up every 5 minutes and could not go back to sleep without rocking. I swaddled with the A&A and he slept until 1:00, but somehow managed to get out of it! And from there, it was every 2 hours. I'm going to try the swaddle blanket tonight and see what happens.

But, this morning, he's a little congested. I took him to the sale, and on the way home he started sneezing and coughing like mad (mom fail!). So, apparently, he's getting sick. Fabulous. So now I'm COMPLETELY lost -- this is probably why he isn't sleeping. But, he's waking up because he can't sleep unswaddled but wants to sleep on his tummy.

  • Put a small pillow under his mattress to prop it up so he can sleep safely but still be elevated to help the congestion. Amelie is oober congested too. Sucks. Saline spray and nose sucker is about all you can do. OH - and some breastmilk squirted up the nose can help prevent a sinus infection, but I don't do that a lot. Once a day maybe when it's bad.
