Galvanized troughs or wood raised vegetable beds?
We're going to do a vegetable garden next summer but I'm hoping to do a lot of the prep work this fall. Plus if I get it done early we can grow some fall/winter veggies here
Anyway, I love the look of the galvanized troughs but I'm worried that they will leach zinc into the soil (and plants). Someone said I could paint the inside of the troughs and they wouldn't leach but I'm still unsure. Plus, I'm wondering if building the rectangular wood beds would be more space efficient. Thoughts?
Re: Galvanized troughs or wood raised vegetable beds?
I thought when they tested for leeching they found the acidity of the soil kept it at bay or inhibited uptake? Maybe do a little research because I could swear that galvanized metal wasn't a problem with edibles.
If I'm wrong please let me know!
"The meek shall inherit the earth" isn't about children. It's about deer. We're all going to get messed the fuckup by a bunch of cloned super-deer.- samfish2bcrab
Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
Hmm... I'll definitely look into it. We've done some zinc leaching studies for work, as well as a study looking at how oyster shells affected the pH and therefore the hardness and toxicity of metals in stormwater. So maybe if our soil is the right acidity it wouldn't be a problem.
Do you use galvanized materials with gardening? I'm really leaning towards the troughs.
We built our raised beds with composite decking boards. We used cedar for our compost bins. Both have weathered nicely. I have a 6x8 bed and a 2x8 bed and I like the 2x8 size better for the ease of getting veggies out, it's kind of hard to reach the stuff in the middle of our larger bed. I think we're going to cut that one in half and make it two beds for next year.
I'm not sure about troughs, are you thinking of cutting out the bottom?
